Well, we'll see if this works. Happy to have other Canadians to compare surgeries, etc. with. Our provincial medical care is different from the American, from the sounds of it. Really curious about that. Let's chat!

Good morning!

I'n 29 days from surgery...I can't remember if you gave me your surgery date. (and remind me where you're from? I've been on so many forums/FB that I'm a little overwhelmed by all the information.

I didn't have to 'apply' for surgery. Maybe the surgeon's office does that? I feel badly for all the people waiting to hear from their insurance companies after doing so many weeks for dieting, tests, psych evaluations. Did you have to have one? Just curious.

My surgery date is june 2... I am going to Mexico to have the procedure... I was approved here in Alberta but later was told that because of my bmi and not having any co morbidities i would be on a list for 18-24 months.

I am from Fort mcmurray Alberta, all my in-laws live in Sooke so I go to victoria every year! Very lucky gal

Hi fellow Canadians!

I am a newbie. Is there anyone else from Alberta? I am going to see my family doc this week to discuss Gastric Sleeve surgery but mostly from what I have read have decided to go to Mexico for the surgery. I have been approved at A Lighter Me in Tijuana already! Am I right by saying that you need to jump through a lot more hoops to get the surgery here and be covered by Alberta Health Care Insurance. Anybody from Alberta/Canada go through A Lighter Me? So far my communication with them has been outstanding. I already feel taken care of. I like the idea of going away for 6 days, being taken care of by people who only just focus on WLS and be in the hands of such experts! If there is anyone from Calgary who would be willing to connect with me I would really appreciate it. I won't be doing the surgery until January of 2015 and can't wait!!! Thanks.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
