Did working out slow your weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I am a little over 4 months out and have lost 61 lbs. I haven't started working out yet but I want to start running again. I'm afraid that working out will stall my weight loss. I know I need to start toning. Is this just silly thinking? Thanks!

Tigermom -- I'm pre-op so I can't say for myself if exercising slowed the weight loss or not but I would suggest working out so that you build lean muscle and keep your bones strong. If it slows your weight loss a little, I wouldn't worry about that. You're building health, not just losing weight. And, if you're building muscle and losing fat, you'll be losing inches anyway.

I know for me, personally, I'm not just looking for a number on the scale, I want the health. So, I'll continue working out.

I have to be honest with you, I don't exercise. I'm about to...because I'm basically at goal. When I lost weight during previous attempts, I did work out and yes, it did seem to slow the weight loss. However, you have to consider the muscle/fat relationship and how you are actually benefitting from the exercise in ways that aren't apparent. As you build muscle and become stronger, you have less and less fat. In time, you will see what that has done to your physique...weight loss isn't always about the scale's decreasing numbers.

like my friend bandie, exercise (not only helped aid my lost numbers via pounds) but helped me lose inches....imagine a size stretch 30 to a size 12/14....big difference...and inches lost is reality as we all know the scale moves up and down all day long.....exercise is wonderful.....i couldnt walk hardly at my highest....i had WLS to be able to walk my granddaughter around the block.....and now i am grateful to exercise again......when you cant do something (simple like walking or wiping your butt) when you can, you relish it...

I don't know if it has slowed my weight loss, but I do know that the last time I was this weight I was 1-2 sizes bigger. It's a reasonable trade-off, in my opinion.

And yes, yes…I suppose you could call me a slow loser. But I'm strong.

I love going to the gym. Hopefully with surgery, I will actually begin to see some of my hard work. My physicians office tells us to work out after 4-6 weeks but to walk walk walk all the time!

i work out to be healthy, stay strong and reduce my muscle mass loss. i dont worry about my weight loss, people in a hospital bed lose weight, doesnt mean they are healthy.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
