Calcium Citrate: What do you use?

Recommended Posts

So I've been using the chewy bites up until now, but need to switch over to something less costly. What is everyone else using for their Calcium? What brand, and where do you get it?

I ordered on Diet direct online if you could stock up you save lots and free shipping. I ordered both, chews and Celebrate chewables. The celebrate are cheaper and 500 mg. 3 a day. I think they where about $20 a month supply. But I had been taking Citracal and crushing them but it was too chalky 4 huge pills a day.

I use Citracal. These are large (horse) pills. Had to crush them and they tasted terrible. About month 3, my nutritionist recommended that I try to swallow one. I did and it worked and ever since this has not been a problem.

I still use Caltrate chews. My issue is everything have looked at adds Vitamin K. As a life long warfarin user ( due to blood clots) I have to be very careful using too much of it. ( it interferes with the effectiveness of the warfarin) I have only found the Caltrate chews to not add Vitamin K. I have also had the same issue when buying my bariatric Vitamins.

I just looked up Caltrate chewables on the Walmart web site, and found that they are Calcium carbonate, not citrate. Rats!

Yes, especially if you had RNY. Our new pouches do not absorb Calcium carbonate so it is very important to make sure you get calcium citrate! Most chewables I have seen are calcium carbonate so they won't help at all unfortunately.

Trader Joe's calcium citrate. Horse pills, unfortunately. I switch off with Kirkland (Costco) chocolate Calcium chewies. I like the chewies but they are 20 calories each. I also have been drinking almond milk for the calcium. Blue Diamond unsweetened vanilla is 30 calories a cup and 45% of daily calcium requirement (that's 585 mg) Tasty in Protein Shakes. Gives you a break from horse pills.

I had a one month follow up visit with my NUT yesterday and she had me bring my Vitamins in. I had bought Caltrate chewable vitamins with Vitamin D and apparently didn't realize they were Calcium carbonate instead of calcium citrate!

I am having a difficult time finding reasonably priced chewable calcium citrate. My NUT said they must be chewable, and not gummies. I think I might try Bariatric Advantage 500 mg chewies, but they are so darn expensive!

I use Citracal. This is not a chewable. Once you are far enough along, you might try swallowing one of these large caplets. I reached this stage at around 3 months post-op. (Start with small pills and work your way up.) It sure makes life easier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
