So I told my cousin I was getting this surgery done & she flat out said how stupid I'm being & how all I need to do is exercise & eat healthier. What I find funny is she is overweight herself & is criticizing me & my choice to become healthier. I've struggled with weight issues since a child & so has she, so for her to tell me that.. Really pisses me off. I told her maybe I should try another diet pill or two & see if that worked then gain the weight back just like her. All she said was "well it works I'm not that big!" I don't want to say she is "Jealous" but it feels like it everytime the topic is brought up. She is one of my closest cousins but has always been very greedy & self absorbed but she is my cousin. I know I don't need her approval or anything it's just very irritating to hear her negativy. I gues she just won't hear anymore about it even though she is the one to ask all the time. Anybody else have someone like this around? Luckily another cousin of mine has had the lap band surgery & is completely supportive & has been successful! So I guess it sort of balances out..

I have been hearing it for weeks now! My family is afraid of the unknown... There are some that say it's a waste and it doesn't work and others that say it's the easy way out... That pisses me off! Especially on day 5 of the pre op liquid diet!!! Yeah easy OK! Then I get the eat healthier and exercise BS or the best one is that I've lost the weight already....Well guess what?? It came back and brought along some friends!!! Lol This pre op diet is really hard especially when you have people telling you that you'll never eat again!! They actually had me doubting my decision! I am doing this for myself and nobody is going to change my mind! I need this tool. Don't worry about what your cousin says...she will be wishing she had done it when she sees you looking hot! Good luck!!

I've seen a similar post about a best friend with a little more time. Turns out that best friend wanted to know more about the surgery after she saw how successful it had been. I'm not saying that this will happen, but know this is your journey and your cousin must travel hers. Know too that in the short-term, you will likely not be able to count on your cousin..... Maybe someday.

In the meantime, we are here.

Fear of negative comments was a major reason I didn't want to tell anyone I was having surgery. If I could have, I'd have done the whole process without anyone ever finding out. But I was surprised that my parent's first reaction was one of support when I told them.

But I believe some people make negative comments and want to hold you back because they don't want to be left behind. If you don't succeed, then they can feel better about their own failures.

Now that I'm more than a year post-surgery, I don't feel any twinge of regret and telling people is no big deal. I've never had a negative comment about my surgery, but if I do get a negative comment, I'm just going to tell them that I needed surgery because I couldn't lose the weight on my own. I was waaaay past fixing my weight problem by switching to diet Coke! :P And if they feel they can lose the weight through diet and exercise, then good for them.

3 people know about my surgery, my mother, my best friend and my hairdresser (dont y'all tell her everything? B) ) My mother is gung ho because she knows how sick I have been and that I am doing this to be healthy, my best friend is concerned and being in the medical field has asked a lot of questions but supports me and will always be on my side. My hairdresser...I'm not sure except she is ready and willing to help if I start losing a lot of hair! As for the rest of them...friends and family...I have spent 30 years being the fat one, the funny one, the one with the pretty eyes...I'll let them have their opinion and I will know the reason I am doing this is I want a future and if I don't do this it will not be the long happy one I envision. :P

All of you are absolutely correct! It does bother me when she says it's the easy way out. She doesn't realize that I'm changing my relationship with food forever & that is absolutely difficult. Adding exercise into my daily routine is a challenge because it wasn't a part of my life beforehand. Changing my way of thinking and how I see food, exercise and my relationship with other will change. But she won't take the time to acknowledge that because she doesn't want to know and that's okay. Nobody has to agree with my decision to have this surgery done because I have made that choice for myself. She has the right to her opinion, I know, but if it's something negative I really don't need it. Thank you all for your kind words and helping me see that not everyone will agree with my choice to better my life. I REALLY appreciate it.

Easy way out?? Lol have them try it...its the same as any other person dieting and exercising only with a smaller portion of the stomach. I know people who does not lose and gain more if they dont excercise and eat healthy. Also..its best to not talk about this to anyone on the outside because they dont know what us sleevers know. All they know is what they hear. I mean my husband and mother were terrified the first time I told them about this procedure and I would be too. I mean come on all u know is what states online about removing 85% of ur stomach. But once u read more into it u understand more. My husband and mother was so supportive after I explained more to them. People on the outside dont understand is sleevers.

I've only told 2 of my friends. My BFF is being supportive, we both struggle with our weight. My other friend that I work with is skinny and she thinks I just need to deal with my "emotional" issues. She is against it and keeps being negative. I regret telling her. I need support right now, I've made my decision.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
