Difficulty tolerating protein

Recommended Posts

I am just over 2 weeks post op and I have been struggling with Protein since surgery. My stomach can not tolerate any protein powders and when I try consuming ground meat or cold cuts to get my protein, it gets real heavy and awkward feeling.

I am getting frustrated because I have so little energy. I have to nap once or twice a day and get exhausted just taking a quick trip to the grocery store!

I was supposed to go back to work tomorrow, but the Dr suggested two more weeks off. I'm a teacher and it's a crucial time for me to be in the classroom getting my students ready for state testing (next week!) I want to go back to work but need more energy to do so. Any suggestions to help my energy level?

Thanks!

Alice

I see a lot of people struggle with the Protein Shakes post-op, even me, but it's importanrt to take them because it can cause loss of hair, and more importantly from what I read your body can actually start feeding off of your vital organs. I do whey, 1 scoop is 30gms of Protein , so I try to get 2 scoops in the am, and just keep taking sips throughout the am. Then I buy high protein yogurt and do 2-3 in the course of a day. My surgeon told me in early stages you should get 100 gms of protein, but if I get close enough, I'm proud of myself. You should also ask your surgeon for a script for Iron, and B-12 shots, in which you can get from your MD, and this should help your energy levels. School's almost over, and then you will be able to concentrate more on you. Good luck, and blessings!

Congratulations on your surgery and welcome to Bariatric Pal.

If you are having problems with powdered Proteins, try some ready to drink I used Premier a lot. I thought they tasted good, were not chalky and did not have an aftertaste. You might try them at room temperature or refrigerated to see if one works better for you than the other.

Good luck to you.

Have you tried non-whey Proteins? I've seen pea Protein and egg Protein supplements. Garden Of Life makes several protein products with sprouted seeds as the protein (gluten free, soy free, dairy free. Syntrax nectar and Isopure are whey-based but may go down better than the powders. Warm liquids like unjury chicken broth went down easier for me in the beginning.

Have you tried Greek Yogurt? Refried Beans? Puréed split pea Soup? eggs? PB2? Milk? Soy milk? Almond Milk? Soft cheeses like Velveeta or laughing cow?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
