When can I have coffee? I am in phase 2

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know when I can have coffee? I had my surgery on April 15th. I would really like a cup of coffee.

I'm in phase 2 and doing well. I have lost 28 pd and staying on the diet to the tee.

Thanks

I was always told coffee is a diuretic since we are prone to dehydration. We are not to drink it for awhile. Just what I was always told.

My nutritionist's recommendation was not to have coffee until I'm reaching my daily Water goals. I'm 6 weeks out and have it maybe twice a week. I've heard of other people not having restrictions at all. I also read an article recently saying there really isn't enough proof that coffee is a diuretic, the study that was conducted was very old. Either way I'm sticking with my dr's plan. You may want to call your doctor and see what he suggests

I didn't have a coffee restriction. I felt like drinking it again around week 2 or 3. Everyone's doctor is different on this one.

Keep up the good work. My plan allows Decaf at your stage and regular coffee stage 5 (1-2 cups daily).

The hospital actually offered me a cup of coffee the day after my surgery (after passing my leak test). It didn't sound good. Didn't sound good till about 3 weeks post op (and I'm a coffee addict). My nurse said that they were so strict on everything else that they allowed us a cup of coffee (without sugar, of course) as soon as u want some.

First time in my adult life I've been a week without coffee. 2nd time was 2 weeks ago when I had step throat!

Good luck to u!

I didn't have any restrictions on coffee...was told just not to drink a lot of it...so I have always had two cups a day and that is what I drink now...sorry I can't be of anymore help than that!!! Maybe you can ask your doctor/nurse about it.

I had RNY and we were told no caffeine for 30 days. Before surgery I weaned myself off by drinking half caf, I used 1/2 Decaf and half reg coffee making it weaker and weaker. After my thirty days I just stuck to drinking hot tea decaf. One day there was a little coffee left in the pot and I decided to make a frap with my Protein Shake, I couldn't finish it all. I tried a cup of decaf coffee about 7 weeks and I took a couple sips and I just wasn't enjoying it. A few days ago I tried my coffee thinking maybe I would enjoy it, I was wrong. I think my coffee days are over!

I never had to give up coffee.. I told my surgeon that would be a deal breaker. I don't have too much I can do anymore, eating, drinking , sex?..lol I wasn't about to give coffee up. good thing I had the lapband . Not sure if the rules are different for sleeve patients vs. band so I would suggest you discuss the coffee issue with your Surgeon.

My doc said to make sure I was getting all my Water in.....and it wasn't the Decaf coffee as much as what people put IN it.... He himself is a coffee addict so he understood. I am 2 mos and I have 2 cups of decaf on the weekends. I haven't had any caffeine since surgery and not sure I want to.

I gave up caffeine several months before my surgery. I should say that i am more of a tea drinker and my coffee drinking is limited. I personally don't tolerate caffeine very well and I find it dehydrates me, upsets my stomach and aggitates my already overactive bladder. I occaisionally have an iced coffee or a sugar-free cappucino with skim milk. I am 8 months post op and don't even tolerate strong, black tea very well. But from what I read here, I am the exception and not the rule as far as coffee goes.

I had regular coffee from day one. I told my doctor that I could give up food but couldn't give

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
