justcalldenise 3 Posted April 27, 2014 Does anyone know when I can have coffee? I had my surgery on April 15th. I would really like a cup of coffee. I'm in phase 2 and doing well. I have lost 28 pd and staying on the diet to the tee. Thanks
Losing in PA 26 Posted April 27, 2014 I was always told coffee is a diuretic since we are prone to dehydration. We are not to drink it for awhile. Just what I was always told.
jujubslim 95 Posted April 27, 2014 My nutritionist's recommendation was not to have coffee until I'm reaching my daily Water goals. I'm 6 weeks out and have it maybe twice a week. I've heard of other people not having restrictions at all. I also read an article recently saying there really isn't enough proof that coffee is a diuretic, the study that was conducted was very old. Either way I'm sticking with my dr's plan. You may want to call your doctor and see what he suggests
Fluffnomore 1,235 Posted April 27, 2014 I didn't have a coffee restriction. I felt like drinking it again around week 2 or 3. Everyone's doctor is different on this one.
The Laughing Cat 54 Posted April 27, 2014 Keep up the good work. My plan allows Decaf at your stage and regular coffee stage 5 (1-2 cups daily).
marfar7 1,533 Posted April 27, 2014 The hospital actually offered me a cup of coffee the day after my surgery (after passing my leak test). It didn't sound good. Didn't sound good till about 3 weeks post op (and I'm a coffee addict). My nurse said that they were so strict on everything else that they allowed us a cup of coffee (without sugar, of course) as soon as u want some. First time in my adult life I've been a week without coffee. 2nd time was 2 weeks ago when I had step throat! Good luck to u!
Mikee57 699 Posted April 27, 2014 I didn't have any restrictions on coffee...was told just not to drink a lot of it...so I have always had two cups a day and that is what I drink now...sorry I can't be of anymore help than that!!! Maybe you can ask your doctor/nurse about it.

Cookiesgotthis 50 Posted April 27, 2014 I had RNY and we were told no caffeine for 30 days. Before surgery I weaned myself off by drinking half caf, I used 1/2 Decaf and half reg coffee making it weaker and weaker. After my thirty days I just stuck to drinking hot tea decaf. One day there was a little coffee left in the pot and I decided to make a frap with my Protein Shake, I couldn't finish it all. I tried a cup of decaf coffee about 7 weeks and I took a couple sips and I just wasn't enjoying it. A few days ago I tried my coffee thinking maybe I would enjoy it, I was wrong. I think my coffee days are over!
Sharpie 3,306 Posted April 27, 2014 I never had to give up coffee.. I told my surgeon that would be a deal breaker. I don't have too much I can do anymore, eating, drinking , sex?..lol I wasn't about to give coffee up. good thing I had the lapband . Not sure if the rules are different for sleeve patients vs. band so I would suggest you discuss the coffee issue with your Surgeon.
shmily 424 Posted April 27, 2014 My doc said to make sure I was getting all my Water in.....and it wasn't the Decaf coffee as much as what people put IN it.... He himself is a coffee addict so he understood. I am 2 mos and I have 2 cups of decaf on the weekends. I haven't had any caffeine since surgery and not sure I want to. 1 Cookiesgotthis reacted to this
Idairene 37 Posted April 28, 2014 I gave up caffeine several months before my surgery. I should say that i am more of a tea drinker and my coffee drinking is limited. I personally don't tolerate caffeine very well and I find it dehydrates me, upsets my stomach and aggitates my already overactive bladder. I occaisionally have an iced coffee or a sugar-free cappucino with skim milk. I am 8 months post op and don't even tolerate strong, black tea very well. But from what I read here, I am the exception and not the rule as far as coffee goes.
