Strayed From The Soft Diet

Recommended Posts

I am almost 3 weeks post op. I have been miserably nauseated by all the soft foods and Protein Drinks. It has been so hard to get that stuff down without gagging. So today I ate some of a turkey sandwich on wheat bread. I was scared I would get sick but surprisingly I felt way better. I know my nutritionist said don't eat anything I couldn't mash up with a fork and I probably shouldn't have eaten that but I am wondering has anyone else strayed from their diet? Am I gonna ruin my sleeve?

You need to try your best to stick to the phases. The reason for them is so your stomach can heal. By "straying", you are causing your stomach to work very hard to try and digest food it isn't ready for. It's just a few more weeks before you can have solids. Be honest about your cheating with your nutritionist. I am a picky eater.. during that phase I ate the same thing daily. Find what you do like and eat it. Have moist chicken or special k Cereal that is soaked and mushy with almond or soy milk. broth is still fine. sugar free Jello and pudding are allowed. Try some low fat or light yogurt without fruit in it. I know it's a challenge to stay on track, but you don't want to end up in the ER because you couldn't follow your eating plan.

At the risk of sounding harsh, ruining your sleeve is less of a concern than dying. You could cause a leak, a rupture or other bad things. Your tummy isn't healed. No turkey sandwich is worth weeks in the hospital.

I have some soft foods on my blog that might tempt you at www,twosleevers.com. look on Pinterest and this site fir soft food recipes but don't violate the docs orders. Take care of yourself.

I cheated a few times. I was honest with my NUT and my surgeon. I was surprised by their reactions. They weren't angry. They were more surprised by what my stomach could handle. But I'm ten weeks out now and sticking to the program. I just started my solid foods a little early.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
