Teachers paying out of pocket

Recommended Posts

I just thought I'd throw this out for any teachers who have had trouble trying to pay for lapband like I have. I've reasearched as many loans as I could the past month and half and found that the NEA is offering great APR on loans right now.

Go to www.nea.org to find them. You can PM me if you have questions too! I hope this helps save you some time.

I am a teacher in Dallas and we have Blue Cross Blue Shield. It covers WLS--what insurance do you have?

I'm actually in Arkansas around Texarkana and we have BC/BS Health Advantage and it covers no WLS, but they will get you a discount at Weight Watchers and Curves. Our policy has an exclusion! It's so hard to watch the TX side teachers be able to do this and know that I'm doing the same job they are and my insurance stinks! I have to get CAT scans and MRI's preapproved even if it's an emergency. All kinds of disappointing stuff like that has happend to us!

I work at Fort Bend ISD in Houston. We have United Healthcare Ins. Our policy totally excludes WLS and cosmetic surgery. I had to self-pay to get my band done on April 27th.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
