mommyjamie 83 Posted April 26, 2014 Can't seem to get much Protein in yet. 6 days post op today. Everything is healing beautifully and I have lots of energy. I put a little unflavored in my soupy cream of wheat. Any other suggestions? Once I can eat meats and low fat cheese I hope to be rid of those damn Protein Shakes for good. 1 NewBeginning2014 reacted to this
Recycled 2,182 Posted April 26, 2014 (edited) Don't be in too big a rush to plan out the future. Your mind is in post-op mode and everything you think and do is related to what to eat and how much of this and that. It will settle down later. At the beginning I found that preparing meals and the such was extremely tedious and time consuming. Everything in such small portions and having to be so accurate. Number counting all the nutritional needs etc. I'm sure I drove everyone crazy with my obsession. Things will tend to fall into a more manageable routine later on and you will not pay so much attention to every detail. But to sum up......don't be in a hurry to discard the shakes just yet........they really come in handy for quickly jacking up the Protein. I even found myself missing them when I would run out. kayzoog 129 Posted April 26, 2014 I still use one shake a day to supplement my Protein. The shakes are better when they aren't the only thing you are eating. I couldn't keep up the protein requirements in my first post-op week either. It took me all day to drink one shake. Just do what you can. And don't stress... 2 1Day1Life4Now and DLCoggin reacted to this
mommyjamie 83 Posted April 26, 2014 Well I just finished 9 oz of a shakes. I started it at 10:30. Two questions, will this have an adverse effect on my stomach and does that count as 9 oz of liquids?
Vickybli 64 Posted April 26, 2014 It's still early. Things will get better. I didn't eat a thing for 5 days post op. Just tea. and then I started having a few spoonfuls of greek yogurt on day 6. As for your question no - shakes do not count as fluids. Only clear fluids count (water, tea, etc.) at least that's what my doc says. I never used the shakes but he told me that Soups and broths don't count as fluids. Still need to get in the Water. I know it's hard. For some reason water still is. Good luck and don't worry too much. I was driving myself crazy the first couple of months.
Kelly Gonzalez 52 Posted April 26, 2014 @ Mommy, yea, anything liquid such as the shake counts as part of your liquid intake. I'm almost 4 weeks, and it takes me most of the morning, gagging, and all to get that shake down. I feel so accomplished after it's done, cause it's the worse part of my morning, and I won't drag it out through the day. I seriosly hate them.
DLCoggin 1,788 Posted April 26, 2014 My team also says that shakes do count as Fluid along with Decaf coffee, decaf tea, Crystal Light, flavored waters (you might want to try Nestle Pure Life Splash), Mio - there are a surprising number of options.
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted April 26, 2014 (edited) Can't seem to get much Protein - 6 days post op @@mommyjamie drinking at your early stage is more important than protein if you/anyone doesn't get enough liquids - you might/probably will get dehydrated some/many have had to go to the ER and get fluids through an IV (no fun) as others have said - yes your Protein shakes count as liquids drink up - protein will happen as time passes (when your doc gives the ok) you can say goodbye to shakes and you will get your protein in from food different stages you can/will add soft/solids ie cheese, meat et al good luck kathy Edited April 26, 2014 by proudgrammy

James Marusek 5,244 Posted April 27, 2014 Protein shakes count as liquids in meeting your daily liquid requirements. So do broths, milk, Water, tea, and coffee. Also I don't think the fact that it took you 2 hours to drink one Protein shake will have an adverse affect on your stomach. After surgery, I was lactose intolerant. Some Protein Shakes had lactose and sometimes one mixes the Protein Shake powder with milk. This could have an effect on your stomach and cause you diarrhea. My Protein shake was lactose free and I mixed it with Water. A few months after surgery, the lactose intolerant condition went away. Generally I mixed the Protein Powder with a half a banana and added water and blended it in a blender. In general, the protein shakes taste terrible, but this method helped to make it drinkable. Chelly 364 Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) May suggest a Protein powder that I like it's Jay Robb whey Protein which comes in four flavors of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and I believe it's called tropical. It's full of Vitamins and it's made with Stevia. I also recommend Torani sugar free syrups to add to the shake. They are made with Splenda and come in about 20 or so flavors. Jay Robb is sold at Whole Foods, also, Amazon and eBay. Torani sugar free syrups are sold directly from the company, Amazon, eBay or World Market stores. I also suggest unjury chicken broth because it has 20g of protein per serving. You get that directly from the company. You can also add unflavored Protein Powder to sugar free Jello, sugar free pudding, or even in Crystal Light drink mixes. One other suggestion for Protein drinks is Premier Protein drinks from costco. They come in chocolate, vanilla or strawberry.< /p> I also suggest you check with your nutritionist about these suggestions and see what they say. Good luck to you on your journey of weight loss.
