Port site discomfort

Recommended Posts

After 2 1/2 years, I'm nearing goal weight & have noticed that I'm starting to have more port site 'discomfort'. I don't know what triggers it. Could it be that I have less fat insulating it? LOL. Anyone else have this trouble? Is this something I should be talking to my surgeon about or is this normal?

Sometimes mine is very noticeable. Do you have a lot of excess skin...was just wondering if it's the weight from excess body tissue pulling

I think you could be right about the less fat idea. And, if you're active, this could irritate some tissue too?

I am having the same trouble. At first I had no trouble and didn't even know it was there. Now, I feel it all the time and have discomfort when I reach for something, but I can always feel it. I don't like it! :-)

I've noted the periods of 'more discomfort' on my port, are related to those times when I've rammed that part of my belly into something which serves as a kind of blunt force. First time about 1 year postOp I was loading yard debris into a utility trailer where the side was just a little below my port. By that evening I noticed along with the discomfort was a little bruising, which coincided where I would lean over the side rail without thinking about it, and subject poor Mr. Port to some kind of fulcrum-wedging.

The last few years the only port discomfort I've had, is a bit of tender skin over the port area, which the more I rubbed it seemed to make me less happy. I changed that little habit and over the last 6 months have had no complaint....well....HARDLY none.

Sometimes my fantasy is it would be nice to move it....yet it seems perfectly placed and perfectly installed.

Mine is to the right of mid line half way to the lateral side of body, and about 8" above my navel.

Perfect access for any fills I've had, as it is well stabilized and easily palpated.

When I lost my first big amount of weight, it was rather like a smooth quarter-sized pebble that became easier to notice as the glacial fat melted away. Now it's noticeable as a roundish lump under my t-shirt when I'm out flexing on the beach.

I have my port in my upper left chest area...and it was sewn into place...discomfort was bad for quite sometime...my surgeon told me that discomfort might occur again once I started losing weight there too...so it might be just that...but I'm no doctor...maybe you need to contact your's just to make sure...feel better soon!!!

I was just thinking this today when I was walking. I am trying to train for a 5k and I have been trying to start running and ive noticed that my port area hurts when I run for a couple minutes.. ( I really only run for 2-3 minutes at a time right now). I was wondering if I should call the Dr. office about it to see if its just from the loose skin around the area, or if they know this to be an issue related to the band.

I also notice the band and discomfort when I go to the beach or pool and I try to lay on my stomach. Also when doing exercises on my stomache as well.

Anyone else get that? Im glad I saw this post today casue I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue. I feel like my port is really close to the surface of my skin for some reason. but maybe it wasnt before I lost weight!

hmmm!

My port is the same way. I run around 4 miles a day and my port gets very sensitive if I take a day off. You can clearly see it under my skin. It wasn't so noticeable till I lost some more weight. I'm 4 pounds from goal and I'm hoping it won't stick out even more. I heard something about a "skinny girl" port but I'm sure it would require surgery and to me it's just not worth switching it out.

I heard the same thing and I would not like to have surgery again. I just had a Tummy Tuck 2 months ago. And they moved my port over a little but at the end of the day I am always sore or uncomfortable. So it has pros and cons. Good luck

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
