I am 4 weeks out now, but remember the early days vividly. Once you are on mushy foods, the diarrhea gets better. Now I eat activated greek yogurt, which helps put all the good bacteria back in your colon that were probably killed off by the IV antibiotics. My APRN said I could use the gas x strips early on that dissolve in your mouth and that helped a lot with abdominal gas pain. I didn't have the shoulder and chest pain that other people talk about, but I had a lot of incisional pain and deep abdominal pain. Like I got stabbed in the gut five times - which I did! I did get a refill on liquid lortab, but did not use all of the 2nd refill. I was able to switch out to liquid Tylenol. CVS carries an adult strength liquid, so you don't have to drink so much of the kid's Tylenol. I found if I stayed ahead of the pain, I walked more and the gas went away quickly. Good luck with your recovery!

Would love to hear what the on call dr says about the oral thrush. I have it too but figured I would wait until tomorrow to call.

Steph, don't wait, it wont get better without medicine, I had it last summer from being on a bunch of antibiotics from a tick thing, Iet it go and it got so bad! The dr. called in nystatin for me today, I asked him about gas x he said it really doesn't help...so I guess I wont bother. right now I have a slight temp, freezing and really flush, I am getting nervous, but unless my temp goes to 100.5 like they said I guess I will just wait and see...I just want the first few weeks over!

I also got oral thrush a few days post-op. I took a probiotic (which also helped with diarrhea) and gargled with apple cider vinegar. 2 tablespoons in a cup of Water and swish and gargle twice a day. My thrush cleared up in about two days with the vinegar.

Thrush is an overgrowth of yeast in the body. It can happen when you are taking an antibiotic. It's common in babies and I read on this board that it's fairly common after this surgery because our gut flora is disrupted. It causes a red, sore tongue and throat and these white Patches that can be scraped off, but that grow back. I've heard it can be very painful. For me, it was more like my throat was scratchy and my tongue felt raw like I had eaten too much acidic or spicy food.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
