Well my first reaction is "it must be from RNY" as there are malabsorbtion issues with it.

All surgeries come with risks however, but I don't think this applies to the band.

I was dignosed with low B1, and B12 before surgery.

The reason I was diagnosed is because I felt that I was having memory problems and just not focused. Such as I forgot my ATM code after using the same number for over 10 years and it took a day for me to be able to recall it. Then I was doing crazy things like going to work without a bra on. :omg:  anyway having the great Dr I have he listen and tested me for Vitamin B defiencies. Although I do not have Wernicke encephalopathy Vitamin defiencies can happen with or without surgery.

And I also agree that with the lap band there should be less risk of developing vitamin defiencies with the band, since you are able to digest more food in your diet and it is absorbed into the body.

Lower in the article it does say it also happens with the band, must be if you go several months without being able to keep anything down. Sunnysea

NVGirl,

I was not as concerned when reading the article even if they mention the band. I have not had my surgery yet, I am schedule one month from your date, June 7! I have researched so much, as I am sure you did, and the band seems to have less risks as stated that bypass surgery. I am not ignorant, I know there are always risks, but the band has the least.

I would be happy to hear from you after your surgery since ours are so close. we can share our journey together. My BMI is 36, which is not 40, but I have health issues that go with it that allowed my insurance to approve it. I am so glad! I am anxious about it, for it is a big decision, but I feel if I don't do it, I will continue to be unhealthy!

Keep in touch,

Janine

I'm glad to see this article. In my opinion, not enough attention is paid to the consequences of Vitamin deficiency. Only rarely are the potential problems described in any detail, but the fact is that Vitamins are really crucial for all our bodily systems. Bariatric surgery--hell, even a general low-calorie diet--can lead to Vitamin deficiencies if we're not careful.

So take your vitamins!

The article didn't scare me at all, as my primary care physician had discussed the issue of Vitamin deficiency when we talked about my starting this lap band journey.

It is good to see some of the risks in print for others to see. I know of one person that had no clue about the Vitamin deficiency issue and had some problems related to it.

I'd love to keep in touch with you! I too, feel if I don't do this, my health will go down a path that will make life much more difficult!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
