PB... That sounds kind of scary!!

Recommended Posts

:(I hear everyone talking about pb'ing and I can say that is the one thing really making me terrified of going through the surgery... Does that mean getting food stuck? How does one get "unstuck"? Can you actually choke? I may be panicking for nothing but it kind of has me spooked... Are there any people to who that does not happen? Is it very common? I've read that it is really gross and gooey. Will this be something I have to worry about all the time? I felt really positive and now I'm not so sure... Maybe I am being a wuss... Afterall I've had four kids (2 c-sections and 2 Forceps... Major suffering, big babies) Sorry if I am going on about this...:faint:

Help anyone??

Thanks

I need help with the lingo, as well, Caroline! While I'm new to this forum, I'm not new to the lap band.

Don't know what PB means, but no, you won't feel like you're choking; however, you'll want that food OUT of you because it's so uncomfortable. This is what led to my first band having to be taken out --- I'd allow myself to throw up to release the discomfort but wouldn't necessarily try to figure out exactly what I had done wrong and learn from it.

Let's just say that this is the wrong way to go! My stomach herniated through the band, and I was just devistated when I found out it had to be removed. Got band number 2 in last summer (July 2006) and am doing much better, although I'm still making mistakes.

If you've had two babies, you're going to be just fine.

I PB when I eat too fast or too much. It is exactly like vomitting to me. I usually vomit up when is stuck in the stoma. Its not too much though. I PB about every other day or so. I think it is quite common. Once you reach proper fill restriction you will have to be more careful about the way you eat. You can definitely protect yourself again PBing if you don't over due it. Good luck. Julie

Julie, pb'ing every other day is too often! Please be so very careful, or you could have a slip. I'm sure you already know this, though, so I'm probably preaching to the choir. Sorry!

Oh, and BTW, PB = Productive Burp

Pasting from another thread:

Quote:

Vomiting is when the contents of the stomach are purged through the mouth. The contents of the stomach include things like stomach acid, and anything that is yet undigested.

PBing (granted definitions vary, but in general it's the same principle) is when something cannot pass throught he stoma and has to be ejected, generally through esophageal spasms, through the mouth. The contents of the stomach are not involved. It's usually just whatever got stuck and whatever you've swallowed since. Sometimes when you PB whatever was stuck is pushed through and you only bring up some nice frothy and perhaps discolored saliva.

Totally different things. But when you use them synonymously, you're in the position of giving someone some really bad advice, or really misleading people about the symptoms you're experiencing.

There are some things in common, like it comes out your mouth, and you might make a wretching sound or have heaving, and both can be preceded by discomfort and excessive salivation... but TOTALLY different in what's happening physiologically.

E.g. frequent vomitters will have problems with erosion of the enamel on their teeth, because the ACID erodes it over time. Frequent PBing would never lead to enamel loss due to acid erosion.

People PB with different frequency - depends on their level of restriction, what they're eating, how well they're following the rules, and a million other things under the sun.

I probably PB every few months, more if I'm not particularly careful around my period. I get really really tight about a week before my period starts.

Ok,

I am clearer on what is what... Still bugs the cr%$?p out of me... I just dont like the idea of thinking I may foam at the mouth or regurgitate whatever has not gone down well...:sick :D

But seriously, is this the worst side effect of the band or is there something else I want (or maybe not) to know??

thanks again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
