Hello! I'm 22 and I'm wanting to get the sleeve I have two boys and someday I hope to have one more kid. My mom is scared and doesn't want me to get the sleeve she wants me to get the lap band but I've read that so many people have had tons of complications, she's afraid I won't be able to have more kids or gaining weight while pregnant and not losing it. If anyone has any suggestions or comments they would be appreciated. :) thanks again!

wanting to get the sleeve

@@britt1511

welcome newbie :)

always nice to have a nice smiley face to add to the group :)

its one of the many "rules" that ALL moms are scared/nervous for their kids

you and i should know that!!!!

the lapband does have many complications

their is a separate thread regarding lapband to sleeve

in other words people that had the lapband chose to have another operation (the sleeve) to fix the problem that the lapband gave them

(any banders here, just voiceing things i have heard)

i guess the lapband can/does work for many, but many others do have problems (erosion, slippage ie)

my doc told me that lapbands aren't done that often anymore (he didn't/wouldn't do them)

so he suggested the sleeve - which i 2+ years ago had

i lost 105 lbs at a years time - and have been at GOAL this past year :)

one satisfied customer here!!!!!

there is a pregnancy thread also that you could check out

i know that many people have gotten pregnant post op

some/many people with their weight loss, helped them conceive :)

take your mom to a seminar - have her write a list of questions for the speaker

or take her to your docs office and discuss pro's and cons lapband vs sleeve or any other WLS

ANY surgery has risks, possible complications................

there is an area on the board where people have written about their complications

its good to read them to become totally informed

these situations are NOT the norm - don't let them scare you off!!!

but the success rate I "believe" is 99.99999%

coming here to the board is great

read, read, read

you must./should be mentally ready for surgery

the sleeve will assist/help you lose the weight

"you work with the sleeve, and the sleeve will work with you"

but its no magic pill :(

you must continue to work hard for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life

kiss those 2 adoreable little boys

losing weight, getting healthier, is one of the top reasons people have surgery

they will be more able/capable to play with their kids/kids will be so appreciative of that

take care

good luck :)

kathy

Britt, I would recommend at your age you research one year before undergoing any procedure. You will read here about every problem that could possibly come your way. Be informed. God Bless.

Britt. I am a mother of 3 and I am 32. My whole life I have never been bigger than a size 12 (typically a size 8-9) until 6-7 years ago I began to gain weight and it didn't stop until I was a size 20. I am now 12 days post op and I dont regret my decision. My husband had mixed emotions but I did what I felt was best for me. As far as you having another kid, I have a friend at work who is 1 year post op (the sleeve) and she is 5 months pregnant. She has not had any significant weight gain but it is still so soon after the surgery that she is being monitored closely. I believe that after you have done all your research try support groups to see if they can offer you any insight. I wish you nothing but the best.

Im not sure i can tell you which surgery to opt for but I will tell you that I was banded in 2007 and had a nice weight loss woth it BUT the band slipped about a year or so after it was in, no idea why. I had a revision surgery and new band put in with the risk it could slip again one day. about a year after that one slipped too. i decided to have my band removed and i didnt go do the sleeve at that time because i had enough of surgeries over the past 3 years. i hoped i could keep my weight off or at least the majority of it (75lbs). anyway, here i am 5 yrs later, all the weight is back and Im looking at the sleeve. I am high risk now because I was banded and that scares me. Please research these operations, and it might help to bring you mother to all your consults because this way she can hear what the doctors are explaining to you and she can ask questions as well. it will help her so much, I did that with my mom this time around. good luck

My mother was the same way. For her food is care so she really felt helpless. I made her my accomplice. She came to support groups and seminars and Dr appointments. She helped me with recovery and generally navigating this process. I gave her another way to care. Now, 9 months post op, she feels a part of all my successes. Its really cute actually.

I don't know if anyone has said this because I didn't read through all the posts. But I have a 1 year old daughter and I want one more as well. I have my surgery scheduled for the 23rd of this month. My doctor told me that the sleeve is the safest surgery for you and baby if you are wanting children in the future and you just have to wait 1-2 years before conceiving. He also told me weight loss will help with conception when the time comes! I'm scared too but I'd rather be healthy and happy <3

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
