pinkbarbie 101 Posted April 25, 2014 Am a side sleeper because if I sleep on my back, I get numbness in my legs to the point it's painful (hard to describe). I keep reading that after surgery you can't sleep on your side. I am getting sleeved Tuesday and I need to know if there are any options on how to make this work. MIMamaof2 30 Posted April 25, 2014 I couldn't sleep on my side for a couple weeks. I slept propped up on pillows on my back.
marfar7 1,533 Posted April 25, 2014 I'm also a side sleeper. I can fall asleep on my back but eventually I'm on one side or another. Turning about every 60-90 mins. I was stuck on my back for about the first 10 days, then I started propping a pillow on my side so it would "catch" my belly if it flopped over. Finally started sleeping without the pillow about 3 weeks out. While sleeping on my back, my back ached every morning and I never slept very well. Was so happy to have found the pillow trick. Good luck with ur surgery!
HHHappy 225 Posted April 25, 2014 I slept on my side after a few days. Everyone is different. Good luck!
1Day1Life4Now 882 Posted April 25, 2014 I slept on my side after the first week. I did have to use a pillow or two to keep me from hurting but it was easy. No problem. I can't sleep on my back.... I have to sleep on my side or my stomach so I've continued to do so. You will find what works for you and make the appropriate adjustments.
Kindle 8,667 Posted April 25, 2014 Slept on my side from the first night after surgery. The biggest "pain" was dealing with the drain I had for 3 days. I ended up pinning the bulb to the front inside of my jammies so I could roll from one side to the other without rolling over it. It was about two weeks before I could sleep flat on my stomach, though. But it was more of feeling bloated than because of any pain. Good luck.

webhopper 57 Posted April 25, 2014 My belly wasn't that big; most of my weight is in my thighs and Butt; I sleep the first part of the night on my back and half the night on my side. Once I coughed while on my side and it hurt so bad. I try to limit the coughing if I can
She's_Sleeved 93 Posted April 26, 2014 I sleep on my left side so the first two weeks sucked and my back was killing me. I only took my liquid pain meds at night because of how much my back started hurting. Week 3, I was able to sleep every which way. I woke up on my stomach this morning and felt fine. mrslosing2014 39 Posted April 26, 2014 The best thing I did was sleep on our couch for the first week home. I was able to prop a pillow right to the side of my tummy where the stitches were and then another pillow under my knees just enough that didn't killed my back or let methods and turn all night.. It was tough I'm a huge side/stomach sleeper and now 2 weeks out I'm sleeping in bed with what my husband calls my pillow fort.. A pillow on both my stomach side and back side to help me from rolling over onto my stomach but it does get easier.. I like to "cup" my hand around my stitches when laying on my side it helps to fall asleep easier!
O-Town Body Rock 148 Posted April 26, 2014 I am a side sleeper and I have a hard time sleeping on my side. It feels very uncomfortable, like my organs are moving around in there or something! Now I just prefer to sleep on my back. I bought a wedge pillow to mimic the angle of a hospital bed and that helped me also.

I am also a side sleeper and, luckily, had no trouble sleeping on my side my 2nd night in the hospital and at home. My surgeon did give me the On-Q Pain relief system (basically numbing medication delievered directly to my surgical site for 72 hours)...I thought it was strange and was kind of creeped out that I had to pull the tubes out at home...but I truly believe it helped my recovery and comfort immensely...incisions never really hurt, no major muscle pain and I could sleep on my side! Bbmomma4 2 Posted April 26, 2014 I slept propped up to reduce the pain getting up and down. A recliner or lots off pillows the first couple weeks.
