Raspy, sore throat question

Recommended Posts

Macacoza,

Well, it sounds like you have been down a stressful road lately. I know what I do when I'm stressed....EAT! Surprise!! Well, I too am so grateful for all of you who shared your stories and experiences with this throat thing. It has convinced me totally it is band related. I will never be that tight again. I am probably very fortunate that I caught it time before it did any permanant damage. I just have to wonder how many more are out there that haven't told their stories and how many more are going to experience this after their bands are too tight for too long? I hope they do a search on this forum and keep posting their experiences.

Will you let us know how it turns out for you after your band is loosened up? I know it took a good 3 weeks to a month after my unfill before I felt I was finally going to beat this thing! Now it finally feels good to feel almost normal again. My stomach did some strange things while recovering. I also thought I was going to be constipated for life! Well, that too took around 2 months after the unfill to get back to normal. Thanks so much for sharing! I hope you are once again going to be singing like a bird soon! Keep us posted!!...Cindyh

Well, now you guys know how I felt in October. NOBODY had posted anything about this. I had to figure it out all by myself. Even my band doc didn't really know. I'm glad I was able to get it together to help you guys.

I had my unfill done not because of my voice, but for my pregnancy. It took about 5 months before I realized I could sing again (I had totally gotten out of the habit). Keep in mind, I had an undiagnosed vocal polyp too, so my problem might have been a little worse.

Be sure not to sing while recovering. You might also want to check with an ENT. They can give you vocal exercises to do.

Also keep in mind, if being too tight is damaging your voice, imagine what it could be doing to your internal organs? We have to be wise about what price we're willing to pay at the altar of this band.

As for constipation.....try ACTIVIA yogurt. It really does work. It has Probiotics in it which I've been using for years for colon health (way before the band). Eat 2 a day until you start to see results. If you want faster results, go to a local Health food store and ask for Probiotics. The brand I use can be purchased at www.advocare.com and it's called probiotic restore. You might also try doing an Herbal Cleanse (purchased at health food store or advocare). They REALLY work to get you going right. Advocare has an unconditional money back guarantee if you're not satisfied. You might be able to find a local distributor. It's great stuff.

I can't stand to be even a little bit constipated. It's a major priority for me. (weird huh?)

One more thing. Antibiotics are one of the biggest causes of Constipation. Not only from our medicine, but also in our milk and meats. Antibiotics kill ALL bacteria, including good bacteria which helps digestion. Pro-biotics restores the good stuff so we can digest correctly.

It's always recommended to cleanse after antibiotics to get that out of you and restore digestive health.

I know it sounds a little "tree huggy", but natural wellness is for real.

Thank you for your kind and helpful words. I plan on taking this problem to support group meeting next month as I am sure there has to be more of us right here in town suffering from this and not even thinking it has to do with the band! I think this needs more research and DR's need to be more aware of it!.. I was even sent to a throat specialist and he could find nothing and contributed to my tremors...wowwwwwwww...I ahve to tell you this is a relief to me and I am sure to many others!!! I will let you knwo how things are going!..Thank you again to all of you posting abotu this troubling problem!

Deb

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
