VETS - packing list help?

Recommended Posts

I am posting over here cause you guys will know what is needed.

I am having surgery next Tuesday the 29th. I am trying to pack my bag ahead of time so I'm not throwing things together at the last minute.

Here is what I have in the bag so far.

Gown

Robe

Pajamas

Comfy Stretchy clothes to go home

Loose stretchy unmentionables

Toiletries

EOS (Chapstick)

GAS-X Dissolvable strips

iPad with iBooks, music, and movies

bariatricpal app on all devices

slipper socks (with the little grips on them)

small pillow (to hold when moving)

my pillow

blanket

Anything else you vets can recommend??

Looks to me like you have it pretty well covered! Good luck on your upcoming surgery!

I packed all the same items, and never used the PJs or gown, I stayed in my hospital gown the whole time.

The only other thing I brought was an extension cord for my chargers. Other than that, I found I didnt need much.

Good luck with your surgery!!

I packed all that too and didn't use it! I only needed the stretchy outfit to go home in. I felt so nauseous that I didn't even use my phone! I also used a hair tie.

But it's better to be over prepared. Good luck!!!

Hi there - I had my surgery last Wednesday. For starters, leave the robe and nightgowns at home. You will be hooked up to an IV and a bunch of other wires and there is no way to change into them.

The only things I brought that were must haves were: one of my own down pillows from home (as the hospital ones were very hard), my phone, charger and an extension cord as the one available wasn't near the bed. I was too tired to do much of anything but sleep. My iphone provided internet access. I watched about 10 minutes of TV. I didn't have any gas pain so didn't use gas-x. They will likely restrict you from liquids post surgery. I found asking for Water, swishing in my mouth and spitting it out was helpful. It worked better than Chapstick

I brought a pair of clothes to go home into, but just ended up putting on a fresh pair of undies and the yoga pants I wore in, new shirt and sipped up sweat shirt. One of the incisions is located where your bra strap is, so an underwire bra is a no-no. I brought a loose fitting sports bra.

I'm as vain as they come (will not leave the house without a shower/make up) and I didn't care how I looked. I felt like yuck and just wanted to get home. The nurse gave me a wash clothe to wipe down my face and body. I did put on a small amount of make up and threw my hair in a pony tail. I live 20 minutes from the hospital. I may have cared more if I was traveling longer. Probably not. I didn't have any energy.

I had serious nausea in the hospital post surgery. It wasn't until the next day I realized it was the pain medicine in the IV and what they gave me post-surgery doing it. Don't be afraid to ask for something else if this is the case!

Good luck! My advise - keep it simple. The hospital provides much of what you will need. The hospital gown they put me in was bariatric size and could accommodate a 600 pound man. My tush didn't hang out in the hallway while I walked!

My surgery will be done on an outpatient basis, so I will be staying in a hotel for a couple of days after leaving the hospital since I am traveling about 4 hours to my doctor. Any advice on what nutritional supplies I should take for those days?

I had my surgery on the 14th and in the hospital I used the robe, the chapstick, toothpaste and toothbrush, my phone charger and I left in the same clothes I went in.

If you search Forums for "packing list" several good threads come up with suggestions. Honestly, though, you need very little. My advice would be to include a heating pad to help manage pain and GasX strips. I found them invaluable.

Ear plugs and sleep mask. Hospitals are noisy.

I packed the same. I did not use the PJ and didn't need the small pillow. This was nothing like my hysterectomy surgery. I say take a robe but make sure it zips. Nothing with ties. I like the robe when walking.

I think I only really used underwear, my robe, slippers, hair brush and tooth brush while I was there. But the pillow for your stomach is a good idea. Good Luck.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
