onajournee 20 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) Hi- i was wondering as i'm preparing to stock up on some post op Protein items what type of things people found most palatable in the first 2 weeks post op....hot ,cold, sweet, Jello, Soup, or more flavored water type products? Also can you use sugar free gum and mints in the hospital? Edited April 22, 2014 by onajournee
Terribj 208 Posted April 22, 2014 after the first couple days - creamy Soups (strained) - potato was a godsend, lots of sugar free Popsicles, sugar free pudding was too sweet for me, Jello was good. My doc told me never to chew gum again, If you swallow it --it can get stuck and they have to go in and do a repair. I'm not sure about mints--even after a month, I don't do mints or any kind of sugarfree hard candy GOOD LUCK 1 LindafromFlorida reacted to this
onajournee 20 Posted April 22, 2014 Terribj-so did you add anything to Soup to add Protein? What did you use to strain it? thanks
Mschwartz924 45 Posted April 22, 2014 I was just sleeved on 4/16. Today I made this Soup. I then put it in my magic bullet and strained it but there were no pieces in it at all it tastes amazing!! A nice change from Protein Shakes and Popsicles! I will try adding unflavored Protein Powder on the next serving. Of course I can eat very little of it but it tasted so yummy!! 1 heather03 reacted to this
heather03 7 Posted April 22, 2014 I'm now 6 days PO and I have a bottle of Isopure, one and a half Premier Protein shakes (Doctor approved I could have these even though it's my clear liquid stage), 32oz of Water, and some chicken broth. Between the isopure and the Protein Shakes, I get at least 85 or so grams per day of the Protein, so it works out. If someone mixes protein powder into Soups and such - what kind do you use? Brand? I need to find something. Thanks!
onajournee 20 Posted April 22, 2014 mschwartz-i'm surprised you can eat pureed Soup type thing so soon, or was it real thin? the recipe sounds awesome, just seems like it would be thicker than what i anticipated i could eat at that stage. Has anyone made "protein popscicles" using nectar or fruit flavored Isopure?
jbyler 20 Posted April 22, 2014 I just went to GNC & bought the unflavored Protein powder and I add a teaspoon to yogurt Soup cottage cheese and anything else I think of. One scoop is 25g but I think that scoop is huge so I just spoon a little in. I'm sure to drink one full Isopure drink a day and keep track of my protein intake on mfp & it says I am getting between 65 & 70 grams a day & that's not including the amounts unflavored I add. I couldn't handle the Protein Shakes after surgery they were entirely too sweet!
Mschwartz924 45 Posted April 22, 2014 I added only one canned of the cream of chicken Soup 98%free and the rest fat free broth. Putting it into the mixer took it down to the consistency of milk. I even ran it through the strainer to be sure. My doctor said you can drink anything the consistency of milk or thinner as long as you watch for sugar, carbs, fat etc. With doing a week of liquids before and continuing in liquids it was a little piece of heaven today! So far so good with it!
