No bowel movement in 9 days!

Recommended Posts

Starting to get freaked out! I did try some milk of magnesia but it didnt work. Now, I have only been eating minimal Soup and just sipping on juice; would that be the reason?

I would call your surgeon's office. I won't say its unusual, but you aren't very far along so its best to check with them first.

I would definitely call the surgeons office. How much of Milk of magnesia did you take? If you only took a little it will not work. You must take what they tell you take.

I would go about that long between BMs immediately after surgery. I had to take a couple of stool softeners for a couple of days plus Miralax plus MoM to get things moving along. I began including fresh vegetable juices to help after that ordeal, and I invested in a Squatty Potty. When my diet progressed to include more vegetables, I began to be more regular, and I now go once, sometimes twice, daily.

Im going to try that because I really have not made any effort to try and go. I havent had any vegetables, zero Fiber and the only thing I took was 2 tbsp of MoM. Hubby was about to grab a bottle of Magnesium Citrate but I told him to put that back becuz I wasnt sure if I could have that.

Call your surgeon - My NUT freaked out when I hit 5 days with no bowel movement.

I had difficulty right after surgery - Metamucil and good quality pro biotic usually helped.

I mixed some Benefiber into my Isopure and chicken broth and it got things moving the very next day. But I agree, you should check with your surgeon. Good Luck!

I still take Dulcolax a couple times a week. They are very tiny so no issues with swallowing. I wasn't regular before and I'm certainly not now, either.

I also have found success in using the squatty potty... I bought mine on Amazon :-)

Constipation was far and away my biggest issue after surgery. Lots of Protein + no Fiber = major constipation. Check with your doc but you may need to use a suppository or some other method to get things going. You can actually get impacted then things are no bueno!

After I got myself going again, I used Miralax twice daily in my shakes. I put about a teaspoon in each one and couldn't taste it at all. Now, after a year out, fiber tummies are my friend!

Good luck, hope it all come out all right. :)

I went to Wal-Mart during lunch and grabbed some Metamucil. I am going to try the metamucil and the MoM and see what happens.

The Metamucil clumped up like no other!! Geesh!!

But I did contact my surgeon and he told me to take Miralax and stop the Protein Shakes until I have a BM.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
