I've got gerd now, ibs now, still have delayed emptying, food intolerances, and no my GI docs haven't done anything for it.

I am the only one, outside of my church family that knows too. I dont consider it a lonely journey at all. :)

The problem is that I would get referred back to him and he just didn't know how to deal with complications. He touted the party line and I would ask questions. It is in the medical records they suspect nutritional stuff and then he didn't, did, didn't, but didn't change my times to be checked up, which were a lot more frequent than any one else.

So not my fault, I went to one emergency type appointment the rest was pretty much his doing. Oh and one I asked the nurse for food ideas and gave her a visit for the money, but dang if you can't ask your surgeon's office for nutritional help, what's the point of them being there?

Dear Lord. I called also because I needed meds for gout and was told it would "eat" my new sleeve. The nurse was "out". I demanded to speak to the surgeon (great guy IMO). The nurse came on the phone as if by magic. I can find another doctor but I cannot find another stomach. I was treated very well when I told her the problem. There is a fine line, and if you make the staff mad, you are screwed, probably. Always be kind, complimentary and condescending.

Hey Linda be careful,

Mine got upset when I would call, even when I was directed to by PCP ... plastics ... I made sure to ask and they complained, stated "I pushed his buttons".

This is what my surgeon's office counts on. They say 41 people in a day PHEW. I was like for 2 doctors and 1 NP?

Fantastic. Many people are hesitant to call. As I have aged I demand more from them and do not settle for less that good medical care. Please post here and let us know what the doctor says. Your experience may help someone else.

Well the surgeon said the same thing as the ER doc and the NUT. Just have to ride it out. Not sure how long it will last. No magic cure. I am going to try some soy or egg protien sources to see if that makes any difference. I have nausea when I have the full liquids and when I'm on Clear Liquids only I have that kind of nausea that comes with extreme hunger. Going to try some egg drop Soup tonight and hope that goes down ok. Hoping this passes soon!

I hope someone here can give you advice, as everyone has suffered something. I am glad you went to the doctor, and I sincerely wish you the best in feeling better. I hate seeing anyone suffer. God Bless.

I am only two weeks post op so no expert but I was having trouble with the whey Protein my first week out. Called my NUT she suggested egg protein. Found some at whole foods it is more expensive for less. I got vanilla since I like to add other flavors in. It was not too bad it does have a little bit of an after taste. Good luck to you!

Thank you! And I hope someone has a suggestion for me as well. But even knowing that others went thru this and lived to tell the tale brings some comfort.

it took 5 weeks for my constant and severe nausea to go away. i was on the patch and zolfran. i had fluids in the hospital at 2 weeks post op. i had excessive swelling in my stomach which was causing my stomach to not empty. which was causing all the symptoms you describe. it took me longer than many to feel better and be able to get in both fluids and any food at all. luckily, my doctor was wonderful, he came from surgery to see me special, arranged for me to have fluids in the infusion center and had his office calling me every day to see how i was. the extra nausea meds and Fluid really made the difference. and time. i needed extra time to heal.

I bought some egg protein this afternoon. Jay Robb smallish bag for 22 bucks. I don't want to try it tonight in case it sends me into a tailspin. I'll try it in the morning after a get some rest. But hearing it worked for you is encouraging!

May I ask how they discovered you had swelling? I don't think I have that since I can drink Water without a problem. Not time for me to try anything thicker than milk.

the doctor had to remove a lot of scar tissue from my belly from pancreatitis 11 years prior. my spleen and pancreas were literally stuck to my stomach. he said in my case, it made sense i was having extra trouble and was most likely from swelling. and i had two xrays where i swallowed a contrast dye and they could see the swelling and the places where my stomach wasnt squeezing to empty. he was pretty sure i just needed to be patient and heal, but i was miserable at the time, since i was nauseous and dehydrated for several weeks. but he was right!

That sounds horrible! Sorry you had to go thru that. As far as I know there were no problems with my surgery. How are you doing now? Once it healed did everything go back to normal (as expected)? What were you able to eat at first?

i am great now. i still take reglan for stomach emptying, but i most likely had sluggish stomach emptying before the surgery. i think eggs was what i ate first. pureed foods make me gag, so i ate stuff like mashed sweet potatoes, eggs, hummus, cottage cheese. shakes were disgusting to me, so at some point i ate bars, as approved by my nut. i ate them very slowly, chewed really well and ate only half at a time.

You didn't get that checked out first? I had gastroparesis, slow stomach emptying, diagnosed a number of years before the surgery. I chose the sleeve surgery because there was a study out of NY that said 86% of the people who had a gastrectomy got it fixed. Now I have GERD, which isn't bad but sometimes OMB is. Do you have that? If I try something fatty or red meat, I get nailed. I tried to do chicken with some soaked in Water from Whole Foods BBQ that didn't have a lot of spice, some veggies, and OMB ... for 3 hours, refluxing. It happened the same way when I tried it a couple weeks before.

As if the IBS & the food intolerances didn't get me bad enough.

The fun part is I had a gastric emptying study done not long ago and I still have mildly delayed emptying. :P~~~~

Moonlight have you been able to see if you can get a study done?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
