6 mo doctor approved diet

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am just beginning the gastric sleeve journey and starting my 6 mo diet. My PCP recommended a diabetic diet but I'm wondering if it has too many carbs. Do you mind sharing what diet you did during your 3/6 month wait?

Thanks!

Susan :)

My doctor recommended that I stay under 1450 calories per day and get at least 30 minutes of exercise 4 days per week. I had to log everything on myfitnesspal. That was the most important thing -- logging everything, every day. She didn't care about carbs, Protein, or fat percentages and told me she expected I would have some days where I would fall off the wagon -- but I had to log everything honestly and not take any breaks from that, ever. I did as she requested. I did end up falling off the wagon, more than I anticipated. But getting in the habit of logging was crucial for me. And I know you didn't ask for this advice so feel free to disregard it -- I think it's important to follow your doctor's advice/instructions, and not shop around on the internet for something you think will be better. And by "better" I mean either easier OR more likely to lead to faster weight loss etc. Trying to research our way to our own plan is a big part of what got most of us in a situation of needing surgery in the first place. Part of the bargain I made with myself at the outset is that I would take the advice of medical professionals involved in my care and not try to second-guess them. Good luck to you!

Hi. Just started my 6 month medically supervised diet yesterday. My doctor told me he wanted me to just start slow and to work on a couple of habits. He wants me to build proper eating habits so I will have the tools to fight back when my body inevitably wants to gain back the weight I loose. I'm supposed to start tracking on My Fitness Pal and to practice chewing until each bite is the consistency of applesauce. He would like me to loose 10 pounds. He said he wouldn't be putting me on a strict 1200 calorie diet but that is the diet included in my packet and on the written instruction sheet. I'm assuming the 1200 calorie diet is the standard they give to every patient. I've never had a problem losing, just keeping it of. If I stick to a 1200 calorie diet for 6 months I won't meet the critera for surgery. I'm seeing the NUT next week so I will ask then.

I signed up for the My Fitness Pal and it is so easy to use. It's fun to see the numbers tally up.

I would ask why your PCP thinks a diabetic diet is best for you. Usually there is a reason and if not that is your opportunity to discuss other options. Best of luck to you on your journey.

BTW - I just looked closer at the 1200 calorie diet plan the doc gave me. The American Diabetes Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are listed on the front cover.

Using myfitness pal. Getting a fitbit. walking and standing as much as possible as uncomfortable as it is. tracking everything things keeps you accountable. i can't tell you how many times trying to figure out how I was going to log the bites I take off my kid's plate has stopped me from doing it. I have to really let go of my subconscious habit/need? of being the human garbage disposal!! Also, I try to keep gum in the kitchen to help me not take bites while cooking. I have a 3 month half-way in appt in a month and I'm nervous I've kicked it into high-gear this week.

Thanks for the responses and info. My doctor told me to follow the 1800 calorie diabetic diet and I'd lose. And she also said to walk, walk, walk! I was just wondering what others were doing as I know my surgeon requires an 8% to 10% weight loss before surgery. I'm off to check out my fitness pal!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
