What is all the fuss about drinking water to lose weight?

Recommended Posts

@@Bandista I tried the aloe vera juice while I was having motility issues and my doctors told me to stop, since a couple of my meds could interact. Posting some info so those considering using it have full disclosure.

Before my surgery, I could drink pop and tea all day long. I could drink 3 glasses of pop plus my meal at a restaurant, or a 2 liter while working on my computer or watching TV.......so I just put that energy into sipping my non-carbonated fluids throughout the day. And I keep Water by the bed for when I wake up at night I can drink some more. About when it feels like my eyeballs are floating, the doc raises my quantity from 64 ounces to 80. Help me....I'm drownnnnnnning

I can only speak for myself on this subject, but for me I lose weight a lot faster and easier when I am staying hydrated. It helps flush out sodium and ketones thus reducing Water weight. Not only that it helps to keep your other pipes moving and is a major contributor in keeping us feeling motivated to move more. Being dehydrated is no fun, and makes us feel run down quite easily. As WLS patients we should be especially vigilant of staying hydrated because we do not eat enough anymore to get some fluids from eating. For good health I like to stay well hydrated, and I should hope everyone else does too.

Lisacaron, Water is my biggest struggle I have a hard time getting it all in. My weightloss has been about 1.7 lbs a week for the past 3 weeks. I'm making it a point to make sure I'm getting at least 8 cups in (what my dr recommended) and see if my weight loss speeds up a tad. So we'll see how my experiment works.

Definitely let us know how that works for you! It might just motivate me to up my Water in take. Some days I am really fighting with myself just to drink during the day. I am so busy sometimes that while I think it's crazy what that one person wrote about the Gov't and the bathrooms ...I really don't have time to take that break so I think I unconsciously just don't drink the water much when I'm at work.

You know cause of course I am the one in the back of the conference room that has to get up and push out of the meeting cause I don't hold that water very well either :)

Please don't take lightly the need for Water -

I was in the emergency room recently with a Migraine for 3 days. Come to find out I was severely dehydrated. I had to get two bags of fluids along with migraine medication. The emergency room physician told me that almost every person who has had weight loss surgery is dehydrated. If I was more dehydrated than I was, I would have had to be admitted.

I wasn't thirsty, I was drinking Water - just not nearly enough. I bought a water bottle and carry it around everywhere I go. If you are pre-surgery, please get used to drinking water beforehand.

My point that I tried to make as a joke is that the Doc gives you alist of things to do and none of those things should be less important than the other. This list should be considered as absolute not as a " I will do this uless I can find some hoeky story on the internet that gives me an excuse to not try".

I think it's also important to remember that those articles being read are for normal everyday people. Post weight loss surgery people are no longer considered in the normal category. We need to always stay on top of our nutritive intake, and especially Water. I personally would never read a WebMD suggestion and take that as face value that it's okay to not get my recommended daily intake per my surgeon and bariatric medical advice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
