5 Days Post-op...So far so good

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I had laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery 4/16/14 and the only issues I have had or am having so far are

  • bouts of gas pain
  • head hunger
  • emotional issues from my divorce with food
  • being grossed out by my JP Drain (I get a little queasy when I empty it and cannot wait for it to be gone on 4/23/14)
  • friends and family feeling guilty about eating without me
  • mild insomnia
  • itching at incision sites

On the upside, going into surgery, I had severely uncontrolled T2D with blood glucose readings averaging 375-425 (with 3 daily doses of meds helping to lower it to 200-325) and my readings have not been over 150 since the surgery. In fact, my readings over the weekend were between 101-120 with no medication whatsoever! Super excited about that. Also, I'm happy to report that I have had surges of energy that allow me to feel more like myself than I have in years.

I'm feeling pretty good right now and hope things continue. I was a bit concerned about what to expect, because I tried to educate myself about worse case scenarios and some of my friends and colleagues had the surgery with a few complications early on. Just wondering if I should count my blessings and continue to be cautiously optimistic or if I should be bracing myself for things to come. I know no one can see into the future, but can things really go this smoothly?

I am really happy to see your post. I am having my surgery on 5/1, same as you, laparoscopic gastric bypass. I have been wAnting to hear what the first week is like. What is a jp drain? No one said anything about having a drain on all the classes I have attended. You sound like you are doing really well. Good for you! I think having a positive Attitude makes a big difference & you sound very positive. Good luck on your journey & keep posting on how things are going & how much weight your losing. I can't wait for my journey to start!

Sounds like you're doing great -- don't worry until something comes along that needs to be worried about! Just enjoy the smooth ride so far.

Janice -- having a drain depends on you and your surgeon. My surgeon says he almost never does one. But, it might be worth asking your surgeon if he anticipates you will need one.

Best wishes!

I'm officially a week out. I had Rny 04/21. I'm already at 236 from HW of 255. SW was 240 though but I'm still thrilled. I was back up to almost 250 from all of the fluids they gave me plus the swelling. The only issues I'm having are head hunger. I also get frustrated because I want to feel food in my mouth. Today is my first day of full liquids. I'm looking forward to Protein Shakes but I'm nervous that it won't settle well.

That's great!!!! I have not gotten on the scale since they weighed me before surgery. I know what you mean about head hunger... It's the worse. My doctor allows full liquids from day 3 so I've been doing that... It's not easy.. It seems that everything we can have is sweet and I'm sick of sweet!!! I did have some egg drop Soup yesterday and it tasted good but afterward I felt queasy and hot and I thought maybe I did too much. I will go back to Protein Shakes alone today because I don't want to feel like I did yesterday.

This surgery is way more of a mental challenge then a physical one. Don't get me wrong the physical has been a little tough, I'm moving a little slower but at 5 days post op I'm not on pain medication, so that just shows how the pain is. But I don't have a pill that makes my mouth and mind to stop wanting to taste food!!!

My surgery is Thursday. My nut said clear liquids the first week do broth, SF Jello. I don't understand why it's ok to have SF jello but she said no to SF Popsicles.

I wonder why she said no to the sf popsicles. They gave them to me in the hospital.

So I am 4th day post op. had some complications with anesthesia which was horrible but am doing better since I am home. Even tho my but said no SF Popsicles I am eating them anyway, lol! I am not a big fan of Jello. I have a class on Tuesday & can start puréed foods after that. So happy the worst is over & every day gets better!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
