Four-Week Pre-op Diet?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm pretty new to the forum. Just got my surgery date for May and insurance approval on Friday The surgery coordinator said I had to follow a four-week pre-op liquid diet. She said this was a new requirement. I checked many forums and WLS materials all said 2-weeks. Anyone else required 4 weeks instead of 2?

Ask your dr..it may depend how much you weigh ....maybe people with less weight to lose only do 2 weeks. And others who have more weight ..say over 100 pounds have do a 4 week diet to have less risk at time of surgery.

Thank you all for replying. It definitely can be because of how much I weigh. Either way, I am certainly going to do it. I know how important this is the for the surgery. I'll keep you all posted

I think it's surgeons preference and their experience levels. I've got 165 lbs to lose and I'm only on a two week diet with my day before surgery being clear liquids. It's harder to operate on us folks and our livers are big making it even harder for the surgeons.

My surgery is April 28 th and have a 2 week high Protein low calorie diet. It seems all surgeons prefer their individual prescriptions. My little tidbit of advice. Call your drs office and speak to the nurse. The are great resources and have lots of helpful hints for you. Remember you are not alone and they would rather discuss facts than having you fret. I work for a bunch of doctors- so I know a little about this. Also you can get a good repore with the doctors staff. Ie RN and RD. Wish u well in your journey.

It turns out, it is prescribe for my BMI of 51. They like me to loose at least 12-15 pounds before the surgery. Day one has started. Not enjoying any of the Protein shakes I bought. Heading out to buy different ones tonight.

Hi! I live in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I have a surgery date of May 28th and am already on the liquid diet. For my surgeon it is a 4 week thing, I was just told early when I was having the surgery done, so they suggested I go ahead and start. For me it's Glucerna, and Water, or flavoured Water. That's it. I'm losing about a pound a day. I'm not finding it difficult. I think it's my thought that it's just a warm up for the real way I will be eating...it makes it easier.

awesome Victoria! I just started mine yesterday, not doing so bad myself. I can't get the right amount of Protein shakes down. Have only been able to stomach 1.5 shakes of the shake I like, but water is fantastic. Today, I did better and predict I will continue. Wishing you a smooth surgery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
