I was sleeved and had hernia repair 11 days ago. I am experiencing severe pain in my sternum and in between my shoulder blades. I cannot sit up straight without being in excrutiating pain. I don't know what it is. If it is gas or something else. Has anyone else had this pain? I have spoken with the doctor to be told it is normal??? I am wondering how long this will last?

Wow! I'm not sure what that is, but the gas goes away in about two to three days. I didn't have any pain after day four or five and before that it was more like discomfort than pain. I think you need to call your doctor back. If it gets too bad head to the emergency room of the hospital your surgery was performed. The sternum area is just about where your stomach lies. Is the pain worse after drinking? Are you nauseous with the pain or throwing up? It could be gas, but after 11 days that doesn't sound right. Usually by day 11 you should be feeling pretty good.

Go to the emergency room! It is better to be safe than sorry. Keep us informed on your situation. Good luck!

I went today for my 14 day follow up. They seem to think I must be experiencing a lot of scarring and swelling. If I am still vomiting in a week I am scheduled for an endoscope to see what it going on. They do not want to go back in this soon since I am still healing. Thanks everyone. I've managed to only be sick 4 times thus far today. That is progress!

I'm 7days out and still have soreness in my left side where they put the gas in. I was told that, that is a chief complaint after surgery dealing with soreness on the left side. Your situation does seem extreme and I hope you find the answer soon. Good Luck!

Hello, my name is Ann.....here's my story. I had the sleeve done Dec31,2013... I've had SOOOO many issues till this day... I was in and out if hospital from Constipation to a lot of scopes and dialation... Last summer I keeped telling the Dr. I was still in bad pain and could not eat.. Everything was still getting stuck in sterum. I got so sick and tired of not being heard and ignored.. My nurse practitioner told me it was time for a second opion. So I went to Dr. Who speacalized in revisions... Had test done and found out I had a twisted stomach developed another hernia and severe reflux.... The only way to fix this was to have gastric by bass .... Before this second surgery I had weighed 177 I had already lost 100 lbs. so I had gastric by bass Dec.10,2013.. After surgery my reflux was much better.. But the day of surgery I was complaining of left shoulder pain.i did have this from first surgery, but went away... Today is April 22,2014 almost 4/12 months now and still very severe pain in left shoulder when I eat or drink..,, I have gone back and fourth back to Dr. To tell him, he looks at me like I'm crazy...,. Tells me I need a another scope.. We'll, of course I had to be dialated again because of closer ... Ok, we'll I feel even worse.. I'm down to 149lbs..., still can't eat without severe pain in shoulder... It had progressed so much ., when I get an attack in shoulder then the pain radiates to left side of neck .., I'm SOOOO tired of Dr. Not listening to me, I don't know if this Dr. Had Maybe messed up a nerve doing surgery.... I finally went to a back and neck Dr. To get him to get me a MRI on neck and shoulder..,, I'm going today at 2:30...... I can't wait to find out what the hell is going on and why I'm in so much pain and can't eat ...... I know I did find out that a nerve in stomach is some how connected to nerve in left shoulder..... Does anyone out there know anyone or had had this awfull pain like me or know what the hell it is??????

Ann,

That sounds horrible. I hope it gets better for you. For all of us having difficulties. It is so frustrating. I am so weak, because everything I eat comes up, but I still keep trying. :-) The biggest concern at this point is staying hydrated. I was told if he scoped me that he could diffuse the scarring if that is what is my problem. I hope you can get some answers soon as well. There is no reason for anyone to be miserable after having a surgery that is supposed to help us all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
