Anyone else with Hashimotos thyroiditis & PCOS ?

Recommended Posts

Hi my names Heather and I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis, PCOS, high blood pressure & an anxiety disorder. I'm 22 260lbs about 5.7' & I'm considering the gastric band surgery. I'm very afraid of surgery & how its going to turn out just curious if anyone else has the same issues I have or are around the same age & how surgery went did it help any symptoms from the above issues? How's life now?

I've changed my mind after doing a lot of research and I think I'm also going to have the gastric sleeve surgery. I do have a few questions if you don't mind me asking. What's been the hardest part? What's your workout routine consist of? How's your hormonal level anymore anxiety than normal?

Sure you can ask all the questions you want..... The hardest part honestly is getting my brain to see my weight lose...... I'm down 87lbs..... To be honest I just started working out 3days ago......... I ride the bike and walk the tread mill for an hour a day............ the last couple years I been taking levothyroxime 0.100mg but since the surgery my doctor has been lowering my dose, I'm taking 0.50 now........ I can say the first 3months my emotions were every where.... My doctor told me not to make any life changes choices in the first 9 months of this surgery since ur body is out of wack..... Pls ask anything... That's the only way we can find out things....

Hi Heather! I have Hashimotos and PCOS as well. My surgery was 1/17/13. I started at 265 and I'm now comfortable at 184 (5'11"). Hashis and PCOS make for slow losses, but they were steady for me. I still have difficulty managing my symptoms so I've been trying to stay on the AIP diet (autoimmune protocol). A big source of support for me is the Hashimotos 911 group on Facebook. I'm available to answer any questions.

This websites been a god send when I started this whole journey I was the only person I knew thinking about surgery & dealing with my medical issues. Thank you for answering my questions :) any helpful hints & tid bits are welcome. Now that you've had the surgery does your stomach feel any different other than being smaller & filling up quicker? do you feel deprived of any foods? Any cravings?

I'm not deprived cause I allow myself to have a bite of anything a want........ It might not be the right way but I didn't want to feel like I was on a diet forever........... Honestly now that I'm 6 months out I feel normal............ The food changes aren't as hard as I thought since food doesn't seem important anymore.... What's important is this new body.......... Plus all the compliments makes me work harder since I love hearing them.....

That's great I guess I can't imagine food not being important it feels like the only thing on my mind on this diet my nutritionist has me on. I can't wait to feel good about my body. What types of food did you stock up on for the few weeks after surgery? What type of Vitamins do you take? Has Hair loss happend?

The AIP diet eliminates foods that cause inflammation in your body and gut. Most Hashis patients report a decrease in symptoms when they eliminate inflammatory foods such as gluten, dairy, nightshades, nuts, and soy. Another huge help in my journey to feel better has been the book, "Stop the Thyroid Madness".

What blender do you use?

I have a Kitchenaid KSB560. It's not a blendtec but it makes super smooth smoothies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
