Finally off the clear liquid post-op diet.

Recommended Posts

My surgeon had me on Clear liquids for my first 2 weeks post-op. He said it would give my new little tummy more time to heal. So when I was cleared yesterday to start having soups(blended), Protein shakes, and yogurt I was over joyed. I went to Panera bread and bought broccoli and cheese Soup and chicken noodle. I was only able to eat 4 bites and I was so full. Today I am not even hungry and I don't want to eat. Have any of you gone through this? Do I just stick to my Water and Protein and only eat if I feel like it or try to make myself eat a few times a day?

Hi again and congrats!

My nutritionist told me later that they wanted to 'wean' me off of the protien shakes if possible during the soft phase of my eating around week 4 and get my stomach used to thicker foods. So I think if possible you should try to eat a little bit each day to help the stomach adjust. I am only a few weeks ahead of you and I'm working on tuna, eggs, thicker Soups etc. I did get sort of a manual with all the phases in it and am working on that for now.

I do my six week check up on Monday the 21st then won't do another till June. Ask you doctor or dietician what they think at your next check up.

Congrats again and hang in there.

Weight loss is a marathon not a sprint. I think I'll try to add that as a signature :)

Odesa, my doctor is the same way. Once I was put to soft foods, he said that he wanted me to get the majority of my Protein from foods. I am glad to hear you say that, because I thought I was the only one!

She's Sleeved, hang in there girl! Even if it is two bites, you are rebuilding your new body! We can do it! One restructured bite at a time! Good luck!

Thank you Odesa and AJ Barefield ! You really have to retrain yourself how to eat after getting your franken-sleeve. It is a little rocky at first but I will get the hang of it. Thanks again!

Congratulations on progressing in your diet, ladies. I'm 5 days post op and on the clear liquid diet for 2 weeks, too. A lot of people that had surgery around the same day as I did have already progressed to all liquids or even purees so I kind of felt like I was the only one doing clear only for two weeks. Do any of you have any ideas to make the broth any more interesting? I was thinking about ordering Soup from a Chinese restaurant and just straining the broth to see if it tastes any better than the one in the can. What did you all do? Maybe it's all in my head, but I have no energy and it all just hit me yesterday when I thought I was doing great and now I just feel wiped out!

I just had my first post op visit yesterday & asked my dr about having no energy. He assured me it is usual because of your body dropping weight so rapidly. He said when the weight lose slows down some you will have a lot more energy. I totally know what you mean I get played out getting a shower. I couldn't handle the canned broth so I made mine with boulin (spelling) cubes and Water & it was good. Also I had strained cream Soups which were awesome.

Ok thank you! I got some of the Soup from the Japanese Hibachi Restaurant near by and strained out the veggies and it was soooo much better. I appreciate your suggestions. I'll try making my own broth and next time I'll get some different Soups to try. I felt much better after the Hibachi broth. Thanks again for your help.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
