How long will i be out of work?

Recommended Posts

Greetings to all . I am new to this. I have started the process but I am trying to plan my surgery around work and school. How long was the recovery process before you'll could return to work? I know everyone is different but I am trying to make a estimate . Is two weeks long enough?

yes, as long as you have no complications, that should be fine.

I went back after a week but I have a desk job and there wasn't any physical labor involved. Two weeks should be plenty if you are able to tolerate your foods and liquids and you aren't too weak. The first two weeks are the most difficult so you should be good to go. Good luck.

I actually took 5 weeks off. I work in a very large hospital on my feet, and I am a hospitalist PA so i wanted to give myself plenty of time to adjust to the dietary changes as well as work through the major fatigue before I went back to taking care of patients. I have read on various threads folks having surgery on Thursday, taking a long weekend and back at work at least half-duty less than a week after surgery all the way to post-ops taking as much time as I did. It all depends on your comfort level so make sure you talk it over with your surgeon-not to mention you will be on full liquids, trying to get in your Protein and fluids while healing. Best wishes <cheers>

The surgeon had me take 3 weeks off. It was the perfect amount of time. Not only are you recovering but you are figuring out your fluids and planning meals.

My surgeon asked me to take off 4 weeks. She said "You may need less, but it is better to ask for more time and go back early, than to have to take 2 weeks off & end up asking for more time." I hope I don't need all 4 weeks, but I've also never had general anesthesia and & eahc person reacts differently.

I'm getting sleeved on Monday. My Dr first said to plan for 2-3 weeks but my boss advised my to request 6 weeks of medical leave. It's much easier to get approval to go back early than for extra time off. But I am blessed with excellent medical and short term disability insurance, so that also influenced my decision.

I was approved for 4 weeks. I elected to go back after 3. I should have taken the extra week. Even though I have a desk job, I found that my energy levels were low and I had difficulty concentrating.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
