I underwent Bariatric Surgery 11 months ago. I lost 20 pounds pre-surgery and 80 pounds post-surgery for a total weight loss of 100 pounds. I wrote a short article (How I Survived Bariatric Surgery) about my experience thus far. The article is at http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

I have also included a before and after picture at http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Operation.jpg

Thanks for the terrific article! I read every word and printed a copy for future reference. I am 4 weeks post-op and will definitely put into practice some of your tips. You answered a lot of my questions and addressed a lot of my concerns in the article. Again, thank you!

Yes thank you for the wonderful article and for sharing those recipes. Going to try the hot chocolate first. Sounds like a yummy way to get much needed Protein. I've got a few weeks before I'll try the chili. Will be a nice break from my soft fish tilapia but I'm loving that after 2 weeks of shakes. right now I start with a myolpex shake. Not the worst one I've tasted and it gives me 42g of protein right away. Wish they had more flavors!

James-

Thank you for this most informative read. Very honest and succinct. Amazing photo, recipes and tips. Everyone should take the time to read this and reap the benefits. I can't have beef for another 3 months according to my doctor but I am trying the chili recipe as soon as I can!

Wish they had more flavors!

I got a bunch of extracts, and pudding mixes (they recommend sugar free) to mix with my shakes. I found a bunch of shake recipies on HMR's website... http://www.hmrprogram.com/index.cfm/Recipes/ShakesFruitSmoothies . The recipies call for HMR shakes, but I imagine, with a little tweaking you could spice up any plain or vanilla shake mix.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
