Have you lost your taste for any favorite foods since being banded?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone -

Last night, I was making Easter baskets for my kids when I decided to take a bite of chocolate. :) Something I love and adore and thought I missed terribly since my surgery.

Funny thing is, when I let it sit in my mouth as I usually did, allowing myself to have that one chocolate indulgence, it just didnt taste the same. :(

I have noticed with a few other things that I truly loved, I have lost my taste for them as well.

Is this happening to anyone else out there?

Yes, food just doesn't have that same magic. People who don't have food addictions know it is JUST FOOD. This is my latest stage. I am surprised about how long food stays in my house now. Before it was gone the same day I bought it.

Before I was banded, I LOVED things like pizza, chocolate, Mexican food. Since I got banded, I just don't crave them like I did. Now I've been craving--of all things--a grilled chicken salad!!!!:)

Another thing I am finding less enjoyable is potatoes.... GOOD GAWD! An Irish woman turning her nose up to the potato! Its unheard of!

Made them last night with Easter dinner, had a small bite of them, and they did not bring me the pleasure as they once did. Have I just turned off my need or want for any Carbs? It sure seems as if I have!

It will be intresting to see where this will take me!

I've completely lost my taste for diet coke which is a real plus. I seem to enjoy my food much more now and I make sure that everything I eat is of really good quality. Everything tastes so much better when you really slow down and savour it.

I have totally lost the craving for my old favorites yippeee. I now find things i did not like have better flavor ( still cant stomach mushrooms) I realy enjoy a cold glass of Water now not pop. Its amazing how my desires for food have changed, I rarely crave sweets, and the few times i gave in for a bite i was disappointed and wondered why i ever liked it in the first place

I would say that with me I have mainly just lost patience for poor quality. I agree with others who say that "some stuff just does not taste good anymore," but for me it is not about categories (such as pizza or Pasta), it is about quality. I'm sure I would still like a really great pizza made in a fine Italian restaurant. But I no longer have an interest in the $2.95 all-you-can-eat pizza buffet extravaganza. In the past I would have considered the pizza buffet extravaganza to be quite the enticing culinary delight. In fact, I probably would have brought along my hydraulic throat plunger to make sure I got my full $2.95 worth.

I agree with the quality vs quantity issue, but for the most part, I have not lost my lust for sweets.

I can leave the rice, potatos and breads no problem, but I still crave the sugars...still love chocolate, wish I didn't.

I've pretty much lost the taste for all food. Having to chew things up to the point of breaking down has pretty much ruined food for me. I now eat out of necessity and not desire. I have no complaints though it doesn't feel like a big loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
