3 month insurance required diet

Recommended Posts

My insurance requires me to be on a diet for 3 months prior to surgery. I have been going weekly to the hospital I'm having surgery at attending nutrition classes, tracking my food, exercising etc. I've not lost one pound and I only have 3 weekly classes left! I know I'll lose on the all liquid diet, but I feel frustrated that I'm doing all this and still can't lose. I guess this proves a point as to why I should have the surgery in the first place! So I guess if the insurance wants to really make sure I can't lose it the old fashion way I have plenty of proof for them:)

I'm the same boat you are in except, my insurance requires 6 months. I've been having a difficult time since my 3 yo daughter had to have surgery last week. My sleep is getting slowly better as she is recovering. I started weighing and tracking my food on MFP, walking on lunch breaks and then again on the treadmill at home. At least if I don't loose weight, they can see exactly what I've been eating. If I'm not loosing weight doing all this, I must really be metabolically challenged and desperately need surgery. I think I'm loosing tho.

so sorry...but I guess you are right, shows you NEED the surgery to lose :)

With my insurance, I just had to show a history of (failed) weight loss programs... so I didn't have to go on a medically supervised on...also my primary care dr was very PRO surgery for me, so she may have helped things along a bit :)

So glad I had it done!

I know how you feel! My insurance required the 6 months of weight management. I have one more appointment with my PCP and then everything is sent to Aetna for their decision. I haven't been able to lose anything. In fact, I actually gained a few pounds. I also ended up having my gall bladder removed at the 3 month mark. I have definitely struggled. I have been trying different shakes and using them as Meal Replacements. It has been really difficult emotionally for me. I am ready for the surgery, though. I have been going to a gym regularly and I have been working on Portion Control. I just need the next piece of the puzzle. Good luck to you! You will do great!

I also need to be on a diet for 6 months....I am trying to change my eating habits also. What my plan is before I get closer to doing the two week liquid diet is to slowly start doing a day here and there then work my way up to doing it more than one day at a time so hopefully it wont be as hard when the time comes......Yes it can be hard but now my whole family is starting to eat more healthier and that helps. I also try to walk around our complex but I have arthritis in both my knees which make it more difficult.....

I complete my six month nutritionist pre-op requirements.

I have gained 10lbs.

My doctor requested I lose 50?!?! Ugh

I learned mindful eating and Portion Control.< /p>

I eat relatively good.

I am awaiting my psychologist to get approval and my psych test.

Then checking with doctor insurance approval and scheduled date.

I have waited for almost two years for this. I am nervous excited and scared all at the same time.

I try to read and research everything I can find on the topic.

I have no idea what my doctor is going to say ;( about weight gain it's strange I haven't gained in years all of a sudden here I am gaining??

I'm glad I am not the only one having issues with the pre op dietician diet, I was thinking I was a total failure everyone else can do it why not you??

My insurance requires 6 months of weight management. I am currently on month 3. I am having a hard time too. I have been watching what I put in my mouth and practicing eating slowly and measuring everything and eating off of smaller plates. But I gained 4 lbs on my last visit. My nutritionist told me not to worry too much about it. She really didn't tell me that I had to lose weight. Does anyone know what the insurance company is looking for?

I think it depends on the company. I usr myfitnesspal and I got a fitbit (pedometer and calories burned tracker). At the end of every day it says in 5 weeks I'll be 22 pounds lightly than when I started. We'll see. scale ain't really moving and I've doubled my Water intake.....

I don't think the insurance is concerned with how much weight we have lost or if we lost weight.

I believe they only want to know that we are able to dedicate and learn a new way of eating and or lifestyle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
