How much protein & how are you getting it?

Recommended Posts

Since every practice is different, I'm wondering how much Protein you were told you need after surgery. My surgeon says 60 to 80 grams per day. I am 2 weeks post op, and I'm not getting nearly that much. I know we're supposed to focus on Water first, and I'm doing fine with that. I just about can't stand the Protein Shakes, so I got some Protein Shots and they are even worse but at least there isn't as much to drink. I've started eating high protein foods on the puree stage, like ricotta cheese and things like that. What is your track for getting in protein?

Same here..could not get much Protein for several weeks after surgery. My dr told me not to worry..cause stomach was healing ..it took time for liquids to settle in my stomach without me regurgitating it. At 6 weeks is when I started eating / drinking my protein at 60 grams per day. I have since increased my protein intake since my blood results on protein was low. Now I target 80 grams. I eat cottage cheese, homemade shake with Greek yogurt , skim milk, and fruits. chicken, regular eggs with egg whites, lots of seafood, little beef and pork, cheese sticks low in carbs and fat.

Each day I eat 4 meals - 8am, noon, 4pm and 8pm.

  • I always have a Quest bar (20 gm protein) for Breakfast.
  • M-F I eat lunch out, and I usually don't decide which restaurant until I get in the car. No matter where I go, I order dense Protein - usually salmon, steak or chicken, once in a while tuna salad - and I order the dinner portion so I'll have plenty to take home. I order whatever side item they have that I like - carrots or coleslaw are faves.
  • I almost always have a Quest bar for my 4 PM "feeding;" once in a while I eat leftovers from lunch.< /li>
  • My 8 PM meal is sometimes a Quest bar, sometimes leftovers from lunches.

I'm supposed to get 70 grams of Protein now. I was at 60 but had low Protein levels. At 2 weeks I didn't have a problem because I was on ALL liquids. It's more of a challenge while eating foods.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
