Where can I find reliable stats?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Im new around here and will be going to the Bariatric Orientation tonight so Im obviously just beginning with the journey. My question is, where can I find reliable statistics on the 3 main weightloss surgeries? I'm trying to read up on stats of complications, etc so I weight all the possibilities. Can you help? Thanks!

Lori

The book Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies is actually pretty good. Also, the American Society for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) is a great resource.

Web MD has a lot of information including stats on each of the main 3 surgeries, comparison of risk, etc.

The founder of this site posted this link below a few months ago and it's probably fairly accurate. However, stats alone should not be your guiding light I'm sure you're aware? Use stats along with your own doctor's advice and research, research, research what will be best for you.

Anecdotal stories will vary and although may be illuminating, they can't compare to your own personal environment or experiences.

Ooh thanks for the info, that was helpful. I realize that there are a lot of things to factor in before picking a procedure, etc. But like I said, I'm only starting out and trying to begin researching and thought "risks" was a good start. Thanks again!

At the first seminar I went to, they explained the 3 basic surgeries and the reasons why you may want to choose one over the other...for me, there was no doubt, right from the beginning, I wanted the sleeve!

I hope to get some info and links to you soon; they can be an adjunct to your processing all the procedures.

How did the seminar go?

The success of bariatric surgery coupled with a worldwide obesity epidemic has resulted in a dramatic increase in the amount of information available. They have also resulted in increases in funding for research into all aspects of causes and treatments for obesity. New discoveries are being made almost daily. And with each new discovery comes new questions.

Although there is a great deal of excellent information available on the Internet, there is also a great deal of nonsense. Here is a partial list of resources that I have found to be informative and to the greatest extent possible, based on credible science. There are many more and I would very much appreciate everyone's suggestions for adding other resources to this list.

I suggest you also consider the risks of obesity in your decision.

These posts where people seem to be given little information for pre or post op make me even more thankful for the TEAM my surgeon had put together!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
