Has anyone else had problems with Constipation after surgery? I am 15 days post op and have only had 2 bms that needed help with enema's etc. I am still on a full liquid diet for another 6 days. I have stopped drinking milk, yogurt, and am trying to avoid anything with carrot juice or cooked carrots in it because they are constipating. Do you think it is the Protein supplement? I am going to try some prune juice this afternoon, but do you know of anything else I could do? I hope when I can eat some food this may resolve itsself because I can eat veggies then.

Does anyone have any suggestions?:help:

What stage are you in? Go and get some of the baby bottles of apple/prune juice. They don't taste bad at all and will help. If you are in the mushy stage yet, then you could pick up some baby food veggies or cook some and run them through the blender.

Are you still taking narcotics for the pain? They are very constipating. Also, are you getting in your 64 ounces of Water a day? That will help tons. Some folks also take Citrucel (it mixes clear in water).

I am still in a full liquids stage, I am going to try some prune juice today and hopefully that will help.

I never took any narcotics for pain, and I am getting enough Water so thats why it is so puzzling to me that I could be so constipated. I still wonder if Protein supplements make some people constipated. On Saturday next week I can start with some food, and I am going to start with some greens! :biggrin1:

Thanks for your help

I'm 8 weeks post op and I'm still having problems with constipation; I just don't drink enough Water. I had 3 hours of excruciating cramps this afternoon and finally managed 'to go'. I can't take any laxatives as they aggravate my IBS. Once on solids drinking lots of water is the key!

Although I can't relate with the Constipation problem, I thought I would suggest something.

My ex had a serious cought of contispation and the doctor recommended an OTC remedy called colace. It's available in gel caps and liquid form... and works like a charm!

I am having problems also. I take Fiber chewables and drink all the fluids I'm supposed to -- but the problems are still there. I am on mushies and drink 2 Atkins shakes a day.

I always said that there was NO WAY I would eat baby food....BUT....I have just renounced that. I will be going to the grocery store to but some baby veggies and juice. Hopefully that would help!!!

Are you still on your pain meds? I had the same problem as you but only the first week after surgery---so I stopped taking the hydrocodone...and no more problems. Also, get some Fiber powder...it works :)

I take two fiber capsules a day, but they didn't help much until I added a papaya enzyme tablet with every meal. They are chewable and taste good, and they definitely solved my problems.

I have been having the same problem-fiber works if you have enough liquid to push it through-so make sure you are taking in 8-12 cups of Fluid a day-I think it just takes time for the body to get back to "normal". I suggest not to take laxatives-just drink plenty of fluid.. Water, even juice diluted with water and take the chewable fiber pills, and also add fiber to your Protein Shakes. otherwise it will just take time-I tried milk of magnesia but it did not work for me.

My hubby uses prunes on a daily basis and he has no problems, except if he doesnt get his prunes. Just a few everyday seems to help. But you need to get unstuck first. Good Luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
