Dear t hali: i had the bypass in 2000 and lost 200 lbs but gained back 100. if i had the choice back then i would have chosen the sleeve, it's safer and i think there would have been less vomiting. also i have to take supplements and get a monthly B-12 shoot. i amwaiting for insurance approval for a lapband. i am getting antsy about it.

Martha, congratulations on taking the first step to a healthy life and continuing to trek on!

Why do you think you gained 100 pounds back?

My doctor told me that they don't leave so much intestine anymore so there isn't as many absorption issues and there is no dumping. Plus if things go really wrong then you can have it undone. But I am worried about the long term success because I have read a lot of people gain weight back because that part of your stomach is so stretchy.

What's stopping me from the sleeve is if anything goes wrong in surgery it's harder to fix the sleeve, I'm not sure of the long term success, and I have a major sweet tooth so I was almost hoping for the dumping to help me move past it.

I'm 5'4 and weigh 245 pounds so I'd love to loose 105 pounds and am not sure if I could even do that with the sleeve. I have pcos but no other medical complications.

I think I've been so excited about the surgery that I've forgotten it's a tool not a solution.

Dear T hali:
hi there! i am 59...so here we are, deciding what is best.i dont know about u but prayeeer is what is helping me make all my decisions and i refer to the Word for guidance.God is very good to me. i almost died of sepsis after my bypass and i saw the angel of death in my room so u will excuse me plz if i offend u with the psiritual side of my journey.anyway i see what u mean about th esleeve. if u have a sweet tooth try fruit. one peisode of dumping and u will wan t to eat right believe me!i think it is harder for us becuase we are dealing with hormones esp pos tmenopause adn also our thyroids slow down. i am on thyroid and believe me i still need th ealpband,i tis a tool i intend to reserch some more nad t hen some.keep up the research adn iwill pray for u to be led to amking ht e best choices for u. love and peace

I have lost 16 so far. Seems like such a small number when I have another 120 to go. Trying to focus on the small victories. I can put my pants on without having to hang onto the counter! Yeah me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
