Hiatal Hernia Repair

Recommended Posts

Hi...my husband and I had our sleeve surgery on 3/14...I have no problem eating foods and he cannot keep anything down...the only difference is he had a hernia repaired. Are there any others out there that had a hernia that were unable to eat and now things are better? He is very concerned that he has ruined his chances of living a normal enjoyable life since he is sick after every meal...any words of hope or encouragement from those a bit further along in this journey?

I was sleeved May 8, 2013 and my wife July 8, 2013. While my surgery and recovery were textbook, hers was a bit more challenging. She had two hernias repaired and it took about 3-4 weeks for her to quit complaining...uh-hm, I mean start to feel better! ;)

Now, that period of time is a distant memory! She can tolerate just about everything, albeit in moderation. I can eat almost everything, but for some weird reason, still have a tough time with canned tuna fish!? I can eat steak, chicken, fresh tuna steaks, roast, crawfish, ribs, etc., etc....but canned tuna just doesn't sit well w/me. No worries, I can live without it!

I will tell you (emphatically!), it will get better, just hang in there and get through the gettin' through!

I am down 114 lbs. and hit my original goal around 2 months ago.

My wife is down 78 lbs. and almost at goal (She looks fantastic, but she's on a mission...I told her I don't want to feel like I'm hugging a sack of hammer handles!).

Godspeed for a rapid recovery and fantastic journey for y'all! :D

I was sleeved on 2/28 and had both hiatal and umbilical hernias repaired. I have not had any difficulties whatsoever. I honestly believe that everyone is different. People heal differently and tolerate foods better than others. I can say that the first 4 days after surgery were very painful because of the hernia repair but it didn't impact my liquid diet and now that I am 6 weeks out, I'm still fine. Hope he feels better soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
