How much time off work-office/desk job

Recommended Posts

Barring any complications...how much time is reasonable to be off work for gastric bypass/rny? I have up to 2 weeks of vacation time, but wondered how long is normal for a desk job?

I took two weeks but felt fine after one. I used the second week more as a vacation week - a lot of reading, movie-watching, and spending time w/my dogs. I even got a little sun on my deck. :-)

What if there are complications? I think set aside 4 weeks!

If I absolutely had to, I could have gone back at 2. But at two weeks I was still having some pain sitting up straight for long periods of time. I took 6 weeks, but I'm lucky my company has a generous disability plan.

I was going to take only two but changed to three weeks since my company will allow it, it's a huge life change after surgery and so you may physically feel ok to go back after two weeks but it you can take more off to help yourself mentally with the changes do it :)

Thanks for the input...I am lucky to work where they will let me come back 1/2 days as well. Looking forward to seeing the surgeon and scheduling the surgery now.

I'm only taking off 1 week. I'm a college instructor so returning for work does not include long hours. The first 2 days I'm just monitoring some group work. I can sit if needed, stand if need, or even walk around. Both of those days are only 3 hours of class and day 3 is only 90 minutes. Then I have 3 full days of again. I had my gall bladder out on a Friday and taught on Monday. Didn't feel great but I survived.

I do have a coverage plans in case anything unforeseen occurs.

I took one week off completely, then worked from home for a week, then back to the office after that. Desk job as well. Worked for me.

Make sure you go out on FMLA. It protects your job if you develop complications and allows you collect TDI.

Good point Terry, even though I was only out a week, I filed out the disability forms for 3 weeks just in case. It's easy to get the time up front, but harder to extend.

I'm taking about 10ish days. I just started a new job and can't take off much more than that. I do have a plan through my job if something happens and I can't get back.

I took a week and a half off, but could have gone back in a week. I agree, it's better to ask for too much than too little.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
