Wanting to feel normal!

Recommended Posts

I'm ten days post op and I so want to feel normal. I am still at the regret stage because everyday is a struggle. Today I tried to be normal. Brought my daughter to her dance class and then skating, came home, had some puréed lean meatballs and sauce 3 oz and then felt like I was seriously going to vomit. I tolerated this meal fine a few days ago. I just feel like everyday it's a new challenge to deal with. I just want to feel normal. Help!

That may just be too early for that kind of food. It's amazing how different practices have different requirements for eating after surgery. I am finishing up two weeks of full liquid diet after my surgery, then I move to 2 weeks of pureed foods, then on to normal food.

My doc puts you on puréed as soon as you leave the hospital.

I started feeling "normal" at about 3 months post op. Don't worry, you'll get there. Just be patient and don't push it...I couldn't even dream of eating puréed meatballs at 10 days. I did liquids for 18 days and then SLOWLY transitioned to puréed, then soft, then regular food at about 6 weeks out. Your stomach is still swollen and your staple line isn't even close to healed yet. Keep it bland and simple and feel free to backtrack on your meal plan if things don't sit right.

Be patient. This is about the rest of your life, not just the first couple weeks.

I too think 10 days is too soon for that rich food. Some days you can tolerate something and the next day you cannot. People post this every day here, how foods affect them. Reading a lot of the posts made me a little more scared to try food too soon, because nausea is something I do not want, nor vomiting. We started pureed foods about 4 weeks out. If it makes you sick wait a month and try it again. We are all learning to live a new life and our eating habits have changed for the better, thank goodness.

At my 1 week post-op appointment my surgeon asked if I could tolerate another week on "Clear Liquids". He said that it would be best for my new little tummy so that it would reduce the stimulation of the digestive system and give my stomach more time to heal. He said I could have a watered down Protein Shake but I tried that and it hurt so clear liquids it is. I want my little pouch to heal and for the swelling to go down before I try creamier liquids. Good Luck to all!

Everyone's doctor is different just like everyone's body is different. My doctor never used the words puree to me at all! He is more for getting your Proteins from food rather than shakes so like I said...everyone is different. I eat soft foods, but not pureed and I do eat meat, but he clearly instructed me not to swallow anything that wasn't as fine as applesauce. I have done ok for the most part. I do sneeze and get hiccups when I am overfull. My problem is getting this eating schedule down. I am never really hungry, but if I don't eat something, my stomach gets real hostile and sour like. So I have to eat a bit of something, then I am pretty ok.

This is a process...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
