First Fill Problem??

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Feb. 22, 2007. Had my first fill March 30, no problems. I haven't felt that much different; it is a bit harder to swallow but nothing to be that concerned about so far, I think I'm maybe be eating too fast. Anyhoo, I've noticed in the last week since the fill, I'm waking up choking in my sleep, just gasping for air as if someone was smothering me with my pillow. It's quite traumatic for me. It's not every night, probably like every other night. I don't have sleep apnea or any other problems, I'm just overweight so I don't really get why I'm experiencing this. Anybody else have this happened? Any suggestions to end these frightening episodes??

I'd say it's definitely reflux. I was banded on 3/23. I have not had any episodes like you described since being banded. But, before the surgery, although I was taking Nexium daily, I would have an episode like you describe at least once a week. You wake up out a semi-sound sleep and sit straight up because you feel like you're choking. It lasts for awhile, even after you get up. In reality, it's acid from your stomach that's worked it's way into your throat. You breathe in and aspirate on the stuff. I had it so bad a few times, I could not breathe in, and was afraid I was going to die on the spot. It's terrifying. I think I haven't had another episode since being banded because I'm not eating nearly as much. I'm also still taking an acid reducer daily. Some people have the problem after they get banded, but didn't before. DEFINITELY tell your doc about it and ask for an acid reducer Rx. I have the "Mattress Genie" on my bed. It's an inflatable wedge that goes under your mattress. It's fully adjustable. I still use it when we are in bed reading or watching tv, even though I don't use it for the reflux anymore. If it happens again before you get meds, try a couple of Tums or Rolaids. Take a couple before you go to bed tonight. I don't know what you're eating, but I agree with WasaBubbleButt above. Don't eat a few hours before bedtime. Avoid Tomato based sauces, acidy juice, spicy foods, high fat stuff - especially late in the day. What you're going through is so scary........please let me know how you do!

P.S. Aspirating on this stuff can actually lead to pneumonia, bronchitis, other chronic lung infections. I forgot to mention that in my post.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
