Not sure if I will be ready for work on the 15th

Recommended Posts

I have had a bad cold while on the mend. My sleeve was April 1 my Dr. put me on Antibiotics but they are causing diarrhea. I just feel so worn out. I don't know that I will be ready to go to work Tuesday. Still in some one pain. I am not supposed to lift 8-10 lbs for 6 weeks. My job requires 50lbs lifting.Anyone else had this problem?

Why would your doctor put you on antibiotics for a cold?

Do you have a contingency plan at work with the lifting restriction? You really do need to respect this limitation. I went back to work after 1 week and I often have to lift up to 60 lbs. although my restriction was no more than 20lbs for 3 weeks, I did make arrangements to make sure I could follow these instructions.

I definitely agree with the others, it's very important to stick to the lifting restriction for the amount of time specified by your surgeon. You do not want any issues down the line by lifiting too soon and causing some type of injury or pain to your healing stomach. If there is no way you can work without having to lift 50 pounds, I agree that you should request some more time off until the restriction is lifted.

You might not be ready, and you might not have been, even without the URI. I had a post op incision infection, and I still remember how worn down I felt. There was no way I could have gone back in two weeks, and I have a desk job. I also had diarrhea in the early days, so that just made matters worse. I can remember the sheer exhaustion just from showering. I ended up being off 4-5 weeks. At the time I remember seeing so many people who went back in a few days and that there must be something wrong with me, but I think it's not a uncommon as I thought. I think you might want to reconsider going back until you're feeling better, and if you go back before the 6 weeks, you'll need a restriction, probably. This was MAJOR surgery, and sometimes I think we forget to treat it like one. Hope you feel better soon!

If you're under Dr's orders your job can't require you violate his orders. They'll have to place you on light duty. I have one employee going out to have a baby soon and I told her I will need a Dr's note indicating that It's alright for her to return to regular duty. If you get seriously injured on the job the company could be held liable. You should speak with your human resource manager.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
