I was out of work 8 weeks because that's how long the doctor had me on lifting restrictions which I can't have at work. I got FMLA for those 8 weeks. I told my employer exactly 3 weeks before the surgery. Everything worked out smoothly, I was worried about the paperwork involved etc, since that was my first time ever being out of work for so long and having to use FMLA but everything turned out okay.

i am lucky to have short term disability after the first week so have reserved a week's worth of days off in my bank.

keep in mind with FMLA that the paperwork needs to be processed and approved by your boss and human resources. i took fmla several years ago when we adopted our baby and (because my employer is spread out over multiple buildings and cities), it took almost 3 weeks to get it all processed, so i notified them about 5 wks ahead.

How long did you have to be out of work? Did you get fmla or disability? When did you tell your employer?

I took 6 weeks of short term and was also approved for FMLA during this time. I didn't have to tell my employer anything other than I was going to be on short term. All of our HR is handled off site and short term/FMLA claims are handled by MetLife. My manager also had WLS so I told her early on.

I had been told by several people to expect one to three weeks off work for a desk job. But it is sounding like a Lot longer. Is there a reason?

It depends in you your dr. I had some issues when eating food . Developed an ulcer . I been having testing done to see why I develop pain when eating and vomiting . If no issues 2-3 weeks sounds good . I planned 3 and ended up 8 weeks going nm in May 12th.

I asked for 4, but my doctor said 4-6. MetLife approved 6 so I took it. It was really nice. I was still tired and a little sore at 4 but perfect my 6. I know not everyone has that luxury, but take as much time as you can.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
