So I went in for surgery today and all went as planned until the surgeon came in. As I was lying there on the gurney with an IV in my arm, he told me that he's too worried about my liver and that I should have the surgery done at another hospital. I followed his pre-surgery directions to a T and literally the first thing I told him back in October was that I have liver problems. Why wait until the freaking morning of surgery to tell me that I'm not a candidate for his facility?!

Anyway, I'm so bitterly disappointed and feeling somewhat depressed. I had myself emotionally ready for this surgery and the letdown is terrible.

That's a terrible thing to do! This is not a good doctor. I'm so sorry you have to endure this disappointment. Maybe is for the better, you don't want any complications. Good luck, I hope you can soon have your surgery done!

That's just weird! Why another facility? Did he give a recommendation?

That's horrible! I can't believe he let you go through all of that. That's incredibly unprofessional. Wonder how much $$$$ he made over all these months for doing nothing. Did he at least give you options of where to go? So sorry....what a disappointment.

What? Based on what? Did you not lose weight before the surgery? Why would he say that?

Oh my I am so sorry! I just can't imagine.

Omg I am so sorry for your disappointment! Maybe it's best you find a more qualified surgeon because this one doesn't seem to be!

I'm sorry you endured this but honestly I would look at this as a God send because he is clearly not the doctor for you, you want someone sure they can perform your surgery with confidence and certainty that your going to go through this with 100% recovery and perfect find you a new surgeon all of your appointments and test will follow you good luck ..

Or, to play devil's advocate, perhaps he is an excellent doctor/surgeon and knows his and his facilities' limitations. What's best for the patient is NOT always what we want, unfortunately.

I'd be disappointed, too, but much less disappointed than if I was put under, opened up and then woken up without a finished procedure.

No reason to lynch the doctor without knowing the full story!

I am so sorry for you! Try to use this experience as your motivation to find a better facility/surgeon?! Wow... My heart goes out to you as I'm still pre op and the range of emotions that I'm feeling now and my surgery is a month away!!! I cannot imagine what you feel/felt like. Think of it as a sign...good luck!!

Thanks, everybody, for your support. For the record, the surgeon cancelled at the last minute because he was worried about my liver, and suggested I go to the University of Michigan hospital. I'd be fine with that if he hadn't told me this literally minutes before I was scheduled to be put under. I came to his facility in October of last year, and literally the first thing I told them was that I had liver problems. (My liver specialist was the one who recommended the surgery.) They've had all my medical documentation for months. I suspect the surgeon only just bothered to read what was in my chart that morning.

I have no problems with a doctor saying I need more extensive care than his facility can provide--it DOES really bother me that I was strung along until the day of surgery, though. I'm starting over again at U of M, waiting to get into one of their informational presentations. I asked how long the whole process to the day of surgery would take, and the lady at U of M wasn't sure. Ugh. What a mess!

But what EXACTLY is wrong with your liver?

I would consider litigation depending on the timeline of events.

If there's evidence to support that he knew you had this problem at the start (and there's evidence of this), he knew and YOU knew what this entailed for the safety of the procedure (and there's evidence of this), gave you options to mitigate the risks and you have evidence to support that you'd followed his advice with the respective pre-surgery health check ups, diet etc....

However, if there's one ounce of doubt in the above - you're screwed.

My view on this is along LL's. Better he stopped the surgery than did it and it went horribly wrong.

I would, however, be interested to know the EXACT reason as to why he cancelled the surgery. Were there pre-surgery tests conducted?

I would also want to know exactly why he cancelled the surgery. honestly this sounds fishy to me and I would be BEYOND livid. all of this time has passed and he has had your file for months, including your liver diagnosis...it also sounds to me as if he only bothered to read your file for the first time the morning of the surgery.

the silver lining to this cloud is...all of your tests have been performed and paid for, and your results are all in as well as your insurance approval (or your funding out of pocket). all you have to do is find a surgeon who understands all of this, is willing to pick up where the other surgeon left off (which shouldn't be an issue because the other surgeon didn't DO ANYTHING) and can appropriately handle the needs of your liver.

don't lose hope/faith, you definitely are still further than many of us and can continue your journey! here's to hoping for the very best for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
