Eating and drinking "rules"

Recommended Posts

So after my surgery, I was told I should stop drinking 5 minutes before eating and wait 45-60 minutes after eating before drinking.

My question is does that include Snacks? So if I eat a string cheese for a snack, I must wait 45 mins to drink? I'm wondering what your surgeons/nutritionists have told you?

My doc never got that specific. I've always just followed the 30 minute rule - no drinking 30 minutes before or after eating anything. The 30 minute rule is meant to keep food in your stomach longer. You might experiment and see how long you stay satisfied after a snack with and without drinking.

i was also told a half hour before and after, but like already mentioned its meant so that you don't wash your food through.

I would imagine that would include a snack ! You want to keep the Protein in your stomach as long as you can

That's what I would assume too, I'm just curious if anyone's dr or program specifically mentioned Snacks. :)

It doesn't specify Breakfast, dinner or snack. It specified before and after EATING. for me at almost 6 months out I drink up to eating then drink nothing for 30-60 minutes after.

Mine says 30/30 before and after EATING so that would include Snacks for sure

I couldn't drink after eating anything if I wanted to unless I want it to come back up. For an hour or more. I must be slow to digest.

You guys that are so diligent - which is impressive - do you not even have a single sip after eating? To swish your mouth or anything? I always do, and I am two months out. Worried this is going to be my biggest struggle.

The timer on my watch has become a wonderful and helpful thing. I'm not super diligent about the before time but I am about the after time, and sometimes when I'm thirsty I am counting down those seconds until it reaches 30min!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
