Has anyone else here been 'awake' for their EGD? I live in Germany (here they think the Americans are overmedicated wimps) and the impression I got over the phone today when I made my appointment for my EGD is that, while I'll have some sort of mild sedative, I won't just wake up when the whole thing is over like most people on here describe. I don't have much of a gag reflex and I tend to be good about mind over matter stuff that might make others squeemish, but I don't know what to actually expect. Is it painful? Or just strange/uncomfortable?

I was told I wouldn't be out to sleep but that I'd be given a twilight drug that would make me loopy. Whatever they gave me (propofol ) put me out quickly and I don't remember a thing

Versed is usually the drug of choice for EGDs here in the US. I've never heard of being sedated completely. But Versed does create an amnesia response, so many people may think that way.

Oh, interesting. Well maybe that is what I'll be given then. The woman I spoke with on the phone just said I could have a shot of something to relax me if I want one, but didn't give me any more info. I'm meeting with my surgeon to get my date and everything fixed this Friday, so I'll ask her as well.

I have had it done twice....don't remember a thing. And also keep in mind when you see your surgeon pre-op, ask him if there is anything he can do to reduce the amount of residual CO2 in your abdominal cavity. My surgeon promised me he would extract as much as possible while he closed me up. Consequently, I did not have that agony to bear. You are yor own best advocate, so speak up for yourself.

I had mine about two weeks ago and what ever they gave me I don't remember it at all. It's like lost time - I lost about 20 mins - one minute I was talking with the doctor then next I was sitting up in the recovery area.
