It's normal to feel pain in your shoulder after surgery. It's because they pump your abdomen with air for surgery so they have room to see. They take most of it back out, but some gets left over and it pushes on a nerve near your diaphragm that causes you to feel pain in your shoulder. It's a weird phenomenon! Walking is the only thing that will really help that kind of pain, and pain meds of course. But seriously, start walking around as much as you can! It gets everything inside moving and you'll feel better.

As far as food goes, it's important to follow your doctor's instructions about what foods you can eat when. But it kind of sounds like they didn't give you very much information on that? Generally, people who get LapBand surgery start with a week or more of just liquids (like broth, tea, Protein shakes, cream Soups, jello) and then move on to pureed foods (blended up foods that have the consistency of baby food like refried Beans, pudding, applesauce, etc.). After that it's usually mushy/soft foods (nothing crunchy or with hard chunks) and then on to whatever you can tolerate with the band.

It's important to go slow with food at first because your stomach is irritated and swollen. If you push it, it can lead to complications like the band slipping.

You can search for lots of info about food and diet on this forum, if you need more ideas. Best of luck to you :)

I agree with BlissfullyBanded...I didn't get a fill until I was 6 weeks post op and the doctor sent me home with instructions as to what to eat from the 1st week up until my 6th week. The pain so I have read on here is most likely gas...they say to walk around in your house it helps. You do really need to get in touch with your provider though and get some help as to what to do next...and nothing but liquids for right now until you get word from them to change. I also agree again with her about little attention to you as a patient...try to get some help somewhere sweetie. Hang in there and hope things work for you. If you don't get any assistance...this is what my providers tells his patients to follow, although they are all different...okay?

Muller light? Hope you're not drinking anything with carbonation? This can put a lot of pressure on the pouch causing your sutures to break away?

Muller lite is a yogurt , I'm in the uk so we have a few different things here I guess ? I have it all down on paper it's all clear Soups and slim fast shakes and at least 2 liters of Water a day , which is hard going , I never drank that much before lol xx

Here in the states, we have Miller Lite. It's a lite lager beer. Thought maybe your spell checker failed or something

Yes, the pain that you are feeling is from the surgery. I had it too. My worst day was my 4th day post-op. After that, the pain got much better. If your doctor has cleared you to walk, you need to walk - that will help release some of that trapped gas. So, the answer to your question is that it is normal to feel this way.

I did have restriction right from the get go too and I was unable to eat very little as well. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the replys everyone , this op is not that common over here so there's not many forums to get info off , so all your info is great !! Slept much better last night , today is day four and it's 8 am in the morn now , the time difference from you guys is not too bad , I only had to do a pre op diet for one week so it's still quite hard getting used to it , on the bright side tho , I had my first assessment on the 5 th march then scheduled my op for the 7 th of April , and in that time I lost excactly a stone and a half , for you guys that's 21 lbs ! I was so pleased ! I'm

Planning to do a good walk today so should help with the shoulder pain hopefully and I'm ok with my painkillers , just a lil sore , so all good so far xxxx

I am in day 2 and the gas pains are sometimes hard to deal with. I find that they increase when I try to sip anything. And i am taking small little drinks. What has helped me is when the pain starts to stand up and breathe really slowly and deeply. I am so glad I got a heating pad as well. It really helps. As does my hubby's karate chops to my shoulder. He gets his aggression out as well! not...

Short, firm karate chops to the back and shoulders get the gas out immediately!

it's wierd the pain in my shoulder goes , then all of a sudden I get a sharp pain ? Obviously it's still there lol I woke up last nite for the first time since having the op (day5) with a terrific pain on my left side around where my port wounds are ? It took my breath away .. Then I lifted my arm above my head and it went ? Really odd ? But I think I have been overdoing things to be honest , thinking I can just be mum and look after the kids / house / garden etc like before I forget I'm still healing , I'm going back to work Wednesday so that will be 10 days since op so hopefully I'll be back on track xxx

I am 3 days post op and am getting the same shoulder pain. It is completely normal but I agree that it takes my breathe away. This morning though I can drink Water without instigating the pain.

hi I have been reading your blog .. It's brilliant !! I'm 7 days post op now ... Feel much better I'm at a bit of a loss with food ... I'm kinda hungry but I'm trying to make sure on only have everything liquid , but I'm thinking are the soups a bit high in calories , I'm not getting low fat ones just normal creamed tinned Soup ? I'm having a slim fast shake in the morning , plenty of tea and maybe not as much Water as I should but at least a litre a day ,, the a low fat yogurt then some soup for my supper , does this sound ok ? I have spoke to the hospital and they said that it's fine cos I'm still healing ..... But I haven't lost anything this week ..... And I lost 23lbs in the month before my op ? I suppose I'm feeling a bit disappointed lol xx

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
