almost dumb question- PUREED foods- HELP ME!

Recommended Posts

hey all, I am still pre-op but having a really really really tough time with this!

my surgeon does Clear liquids for 5 days, then full liquids for 5 days THEN the pureed foods. I have two kids and practically couldn't feed them baby food because I was STRONGLY averted to the sight and smell. I often got sick from it. the simple THOUGHT of cooking meats, Soups, main courses, etc and then blending them....oh dear GOD just makes my stomach turn. badly. just thinking about it.

what am I to do????? the pureed foods are from day 10-21 post-op. I'm pretty sure I'll have some hunger by then. the suggestions from the surgeon include pureeing chicken, boiled eggs, chili, shepards pie, and other things. GROSS. period. now, having something MASHED would be ok. but fully blended would do me in.

please don't think that i'm being obnoxious or smart aleck, I simply cannot even mentally get myself to the idea of eating pureed foods. I don't know what to do. I wonder if staying on the full liquids is even an option? I know the point is to gradually phase your pouch into accepting new amounts and textures but this one is a huge mental block for me. I meet with the nutritionist in a couple weeks and seriously, this is my only question for them!

fyi- refried Beans, yogurt are ok which I LOVE both of so that is ok...oatmeal too, but it has to be very thin. so 3 things I can stomach.

any other recommendations or ideas are VERY much appreciated!!!!!!

I know many will disagree with this. But when I advanced to the purée stage, I decided to just do 'soft' foods instead. I just could NOT tolerate purée. And I know everybody says to follow your doctor's orders, but on this one thing, I went with my gut. I know my body way better than any doctor. Anyways I did great on the soft foods, I lost weight and I felt fine.

I worked in a group home with clients who were mentally and physically handicapped. I had to completely purée food for one of them. Absolutely everything he ate, think of a piece of pizza the consistency of a milk shake. So I completely understand how you feel. I didn't blend or purée anything.

I'm Focusing on soft foods I could chew. If you're not going to purée, just remember to chew chew chew. I ate grilled chicken, fish, deli meat, yogurt, cheese and crackers ECT. Chili is good because it's already in small pieces. Count how many times you chew, and get at least 25-30 chews in.

I think the idea behind the pureed phase is to get us used to the consistency to which we should be chewing food. I started pureed today... I had scrambled eggs and refried Beans with melted cheese. No problem. Of course, these are all very small amounts eaten very slowly... chew chew chew.

Try sticking with as many foods as you can that are already the consistency you need them. oatmeal, cream Soups, apple sauce, tuna, mashed potatoes, etc. I went with soft foods like these and I was fine. My nutritionist said as long as it's soft nough to be mashed with a fork it's fine. I didnt puree anything. Im with you, the thought of a pureed meal is just icky. Now, if you chop up chicken really fine and mix in a little light mayo, it's not pureed. It's chicken salad :)

Your doctor is so lenient with your diet. I know all docs diets are different but wow.. I'm 3 months post op and still on full liquids with cheese, Beans, eggs, crackers and oatmeal added.. nothing more.. have never puked and only dumped once. (My own fault)

No doubt your diet is what is making you nauseous. Not everyone can advance without problems. A lot of people have to back up. My suggestion is if you are super sensitive (like me) you back your diet back to full cream liquids and crackers and advance much more slowly.

I thought my doc was crazy going so slow but I have seen why he is so careful. Our pouch is new.. would we give a 6 week baby puree foods? It would make them sick.

I hope this helps

I completely understand. I was so excited to get to the pureed stage. But now just thinking about food makes snarl my nose. I'm eating a lot of yogurt, Soup, and refried Beans.< /p>

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Lost my Pup last month and struggled really hard for that first month. Stopped tracking intake and slid into old habits here and there. Also quit working out. Can't walk in the neighborhood because of all of the memories we shared. Losing my Pup is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever been through. My Pup was my world 💔
Talked to my doc during my one year followup and they were not worried about my current status. They know, and I know, that I will get back on track.
