I am in the hospital and feel constipated it's a side effect to the pain medication.

I have been walking a lot to try to get rid of this gas pain . As I sit on the chair it feels better than laying in bed but I become so tired that I want to nap

I had expect to be constipated, but I'm exactly the opposite. How many days post op are you? It gets easier with every day. I'm day 3 not and feeling better good :)

If it is black call your doc. A couple times having black (old blood) is normal but if you continue to have it you could be passing fresh blood and not realize it. A simple blood test will tell your doc if your bleeding.

I had my surgery on 4/3 and the diarrhea started at the hospital and between the day I came home and the following day I had 12 episodes. Each day brings less episodes but when I called the surgeon the PA said not to worry unless there are more then 15 episodes. I trusted her judgement and have been having less and less. Just make sure you are keeping hydrated. She said as long as your urine is not getting darker or more concentrated you should be ok. Also you are not taking in anything solid so you cannot expect any solid to come out. Sorry if that was TMI. Good luck!

My NP said to expect "loose" BM because there is nothing solid in my system. She said it could last until I am getting more food in during week 3. I was shocked because everyone only talked about being constipated. I'm a few days pre-op so I'm getting myself in to the mind set that everything will be flowing out. Yuck.

Watch your "sugar free" drinks and foods including popsicles. They often have "sugar alcohol" which can act like a laxative.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
