I was sleeved 2/28/14.. no complications. It's unfortunate your family isn't being supportive. People tend to fear the unknown. I would do some research online about the procedure as well as the surgeon performing it and present that to your family. Ultimately it is your decision. Joining this site was a step in the right direction for support. Hang in there and do what is best for you and your health.

I had no complications whatsoever. I am nine months out and doing great. That said, if I were you (not that you asked for my advice, feel free to disregard!) I would put aside trying to convince your family of the rightness of your decision. It's YOUR decision. They don't need to approve of it. You are doing this for you. I would just stop talking about it with them. If they bring it up -- want to tell you horror stories, change your mind, plant doubts -- tell them you've made your decision and would appreciate their support, but if they can't provide that, then you don't want to discuss it. If they persist, walk away.

It is your decision but will you be able to go through this process with non supportive people? I personally only told my best friend and when I got my date that's when I told my parents, not that waiting would of changed their thoughts but it didn't have me dwelling on their comments. Ultimately they were very supportive. Maybe have them go with you to a bariatric support group where they can listen to people's stories and ask questions themselves. Good luck to you and this amazing journey. It will all work out :)

I am 2 weeks out and had a slight complication. When they made my largest incision on the left, the cut a nerve. This caused significant pain that we've just gotten out of control the past 3 days with a medication specifically for nerve pain. The pain was no joke; however, it's temporary and my sleeve is doing great. Down 17.7 lbs and I figure this is a small bump in the road. Without the surgery, I'd be headed to meds for diabetes and high blood pressure. The data shows the risks associated with obesity are far greater than those of the surgery.

That being said, I agree with the others, you have to feel right about it and it is more difficult to do that without support. More information and education can help tremendously. My surgeon explained everything beautifully to my husband and mother and I saw their worries ease. Would yours be willing to do that?

My family wasn't 'not' supportive, but they didn't understand WHY I was doing it. They would say, 'you are not THAT big,' or 'you always had such a great attitude about being your size.' They admitted that they were afraid for me, because it IS major surgery. I assured them I had done all the research possible, AND I was doing it anyway! I am 8 days post op and haven't had any complications (except that gas child --- whoo!) Find peace in your decision. When you begin to live a healthier life, they all will be glad you did, but the most important person in YOUR decision is YOU! Chin up!

I am 6 days post-op and doing well. Thank God no complications. I am sorry your family is not being supportive. I am off all my diabetes meds and blood pressure med. My husband attended some groups w/ me and also met w/ the surgeon so he received a lot of information that way. Measuring the pros and cons... the surgery will save you a lifetime of complications from obesity vs. the small chance of complications. Just my 2 cents!

I didn't tell my husband yet and I'm practicing on how to tell him. I can see he telling me that I don't need it and that I should just exercise daily and stop eating. Of course I would answer that I did that already and it didn't work. He would say I didn't tried hard enough. It's consuming me. Besides the idea of me going to Mexico is going to be the cherry on the top of the ice cream. Anyways I paid the down payment to Ready4Achange and I have the sleeve date for the 8th of may with dr Fernando Garcia. I booked n paid for the flight already. Ultimately ill tell him anyways but I know he's gonna take the news as a irresponsible thing I'm doing because we could use the money in so many diff ways, with our family. I don't have money to spare but I worked extra hard to put together that money so I shouldn't feel guilt about how I'm going to spend it. But he works very hard too and all money he makes is to give our family a better life. He never spends anything with himself. This is a cry for help

I bent and ripped internal scar tissue that caused a very significant amount of pain and I'm on 3 different meds Bc of severe nausea. That being said, I'd still do this operation a million times over. Small price to pay. I'm off BP meds and meds that controlled neuropathic pain from spinal stenosis. I've lost almost 30 pounds in 7 weeks (50 total) and feel like I actually have a future.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
