An EGD is short for esophagogastroduodenoscopy which is a mouthful to say the least! It is a scope which looks at your esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum). A fiberoptic scope is inserted into your mouth for this. You are sedated for this procedure. Many surgeons and insurance companies require this pre-op because if there is a problem with ulcers or some type of anatomical issue, it is better found during this than during surgery itself. They usually also routinely check for H. pylori which is a bacteria often associated with ulcers.

My insurance and my surgeon both required this. I know a great deal about these procedures because I am a nurse practitioner who works in gastroenterology and talk to people day in and day out about endoscopies. You need to find out if you need it done. Often the surgeons will do it themselves. I hope this helps!

I also was required to have an EGD. My bariatric surgery insists on doing it himself so he can see my anatomy himself. He was looking for hiatal hernias which, if found, he would repair during the bariatric procedure. He was also looking for the H. Pylori and took a biopsy. If I would have had H. Pylori then it would require treatment. H. Pylori can cause or currently be causing serious gastrointestinal issues so my surgeon wants to make sure I am free from this bacteria before proceeding. Thank God I didn't have it but I am very glad he is being so thorough.

So not a big deal.... IV fluids, night night, wake up, go home. No pain no nothin. They just look for hernia, inflammation, cysts etc... It's fun!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
